ROUNDUP: Top performing high school athletes from the week of May 5-11

SAINT CLOUD – Welcome to the St. Cloud Times’ list of standout athletes.

Through the spring season, staff will weekly be highlighting athletes who performed well individually in varsity competitions held during the previous week. The list will include athletes from Albany, Becker, Foley, Holdingford, Kimball, ROCORI, Royalton, Sartell-St. Stephen, Sauk Rapids-Rice, St. Cloud Apollo, St. Cloud Cathedral, St. Cloud Tech, and St. John’s Prep competing in golf, lacrosse, tennis and track and field.

This week is covering May 5-11.

Boys golf

Zac Kreuzer

Albany senior

Albany competed in three events last week and Zac Kreuzer took home three top-two medals. As a team the Huskies won on May 6 at their home course with a score of 294, won on May 9 at Kimball Golf Club with a score of 316 and won May 10 at the GRC meet at Little Falls Golf Course with a score of 316.

Kreuzer won at home and in Little Falls with scores of 72 and 73, but took second at Kimball

At the Albany Golf Club Kreuzer tied with teammate Joe Hess atop the board, then he took second in Kimball with a 77. He and Hess shot a 72 to win that first meet.

Girls golf

Avery Maus

Kimball senior

Competing in three nine-hole team wins for Kimball, Avery Maus placed second May 10 at the Little Falls Golf Course, second May 10 at the Osakis Country Club and again second May 11 at the Prairie View Community Golf Course. Maus shot a one-back 41 at Little Falls, 42 at Osakis and 45 at Prairie View.

Sartell senior

Sartell also competed in three events, taking third as a team May 7 at Willmar’s invite at Eagle Creek, second May 9 at St. Cloud Country Club and third at the Section 8-3A pre-section meet May 11 at Greystone Golf Club.l

Shayla Norlund nabbed a medal at all three meets, starting with tying for first at Eagle Creek with a 74. She was eight shots behind first in St. Cloud with an 80 and Norlund shot a 82 at Greystone, tying for second.

St. Cloud Crush senior goaltender

In three games last week, the St. Cloud Crush (6-4) lost to Moorhead (8-3) on May 7, but bounced back with two wins over section opponents ROCORI (4-7) on May 9 and Becker (1-8) the next day. The Crush struggled against the Spuds on attack, scoring a season-low three goals for their second loss in a row, a 9-3 defeat. Defense and goaltending helped St. Cloud edge past the Spartans 6-5 and the Crush had an outpouring of goals against the Bulldogs, winning 16-10. St. Cloud has four games remaining before the Section 8-1A tournament including Thursday against Sartell/Sauk Rapids at Apollo.

Recent Carroll signee Jonas Malmanger stands between the pipes for the Crush, stopping 31 shots against Moorhead, then 15 and 17 in the late-week games. He faced 84 shots on goal, making his save percentage .75 on the week, over 50 points higher than his season average.

Connor Wavrin

St. Cloud senior attacker

Senior Connor Wavrin had seven goals in the final game against Becker after netting three in the previous two games. He also had five assists, bringing his weekly total to six and his points total to 16. Wavrin also had four ground balls in the trio of games. He leads the team in goals with 31 and points with 48. Classmate Connor Harens has 22 goals and 45 points.

ROCORI junior attacker/midfielder

ROCORI (4-7) split its two games last week, beating Sartell/Sauk Rapids (0-8) on May 7, but losing to St. Cloud (6-4) on May 9. The Spartans beat the Storm’n Sabres 14-8 and lost to the Crush 14-5.

Emma Ryan had four of the goals against St. Cloud, over half of her week total of seven. She didn’t assist the other goal against the Crush, but had three against Sartell/Sauk Rapids. She also had 13 ground balls in the two games.

Cecelia Meemken

St. Cloud sophomore goaltender

Between last week's games when St. Cloud scored 16 and 14 goals and a win on Tuesday, the Crush has scored more goals than in the previous four-game losing streak. Sophomore Cecelia Meemken is the team’s top performer this week, stopping eight of 10 shots and three of six shots May 9 against ROCORI. She played a half in both wins, recording a save percentage of .688. The Crush beat the Stealth 16-8 and the Spartans 14-5.

Boys tennis

Josh Vogel

St. Cloud Crush junior individual and doubles player

The St. Cloud Crush (12-9) were able to get six matches in last week, losing to Brainerd (10-7) on May 6 5-2 winning two matches May 9 against Moorhead (6-13) and Bemidji (12-4) by scores of 4-3 and 5-2 and going 2-1 at a quadrangular May 11 at Buffalo. St. Cloud beat Rogers (8-12) 5-2 and Buffalo (11-12) 4-3, but lost to Alexandria (22-4) 5-2.

Junior Josh Vogel went 6-0 during that time, including during a doubles match with Charles Simon against Alexandria which won their games 6-0 and 6-2. Vogel was solo during his other matches with close defeats of his Brainerd (6-4, 6-2), Bemidji (6-3, 4-6, 6-2) and Buffalo (6-4, 7-5) opponents and decisive wins over those from Moorhead (6-1, 6-1) and Alex (6-0, 6-2).

Owen Anderson

Cathedral senior runner

Owen Anderson won the 400-meter race at the Section 5-2A True Team meet May 7 at ROCORI, clocking a time of 51.53.

Owen Angell

Becker junior hurdler, jumper and vaulter

Owen Angell won three of four events May 7 at the section true team meet and he got second place in the fourth event. A time of 15.40 won the 110 hurdles and his school-record 39.52 won the 300 hurdles.

Angell also won the pole vault by six inches, clearing 14 feet. He set the school record the previous week at 15 feet the same meet where he set a record in the 110-meter hurdles.

In his final event at the true team meet, Angell’s 6-foot high jump was second by two inches.

Nick Hansen

St. John’s senior runner and jumper

Nick Hansen ran a 9:45.57 in the 3,200-meter race on May 9 at the Dave Sieben Invitational in Melrose, taking first by about 30 seconds. He also competed in the long jump, placing 19th with a leap of 16 feet 1 1/2 inches.

Dawson Hofer

Holdingford freshman runner and jumper

Dawson Hofer competed in three running events and the high jump May 7 at the Section 5-1A True Team meet in Montevideo, winning the 200 and 1,600. In the sprint, he ran a 23.53 and his 4:43.83 took first in the 1,600. He finished second in the high jump by two inches, clearing 5-10. Finally, Hofer was ninth in the 100 with an 11.64.

Carter Reckelberg

Becker junior runner and jumper

Carter Reckelberg continued to win events for Becker last week, leaving the Section 5-2A True Team meet May 7 at ROCORI with four golds in the 100, 200, long jump and triple jump. He set a school record in the latter with a distance of 44-9 ¼. Reckelberg timed 11.33 and 22.45 in the sprints and he jumped 23-6 ¾ in the long jump, winning by a few feet.

ROCORI’s senior thrower won the shot put on May 7 at the section true team in Cold Spring by nearly 11 feet, but placed second in the discus to St. Francis Junior Samuel Ruid. Minnerath threw 57-11 1/2 in the shot put and 153 in the discus.

Carter Schwalbe

Albany senior runner

Albany’s Carter Schwalbe won the 1,600 on May 9 at the Dave Sieben Invitational in Melrose by a split second, clocking a 4:30.3 in the race.

Girls track and field

Rilee Breth

Holdingford sophomore hurdler and jumper

Rilee Breth competed in four events for Holdingford at the true team meet in Montevideo, both hurdles races and the long and high jumps. She placed in all four, winning the hurdles sprint with a time of 15.74. In the longer race Breth took third with a time of 48.56. She was also third in both jumping events, clearing 4-10 in the high jump and 15-4 1/2 in the long jump.

Ella Duevel was first in the discus in ROCORI by over 20 feet, but was second in the shot put by inches. She threw 130-7 in the discus and 37-4 3/4 in the shot put.

Brenna Konsor

Holdingford seventh grader

In the 400 on May 7 at the Section 5-1A True Team meet in Montevideo, Brenna Konsor ran a 1:03.2 and placed first.

Zili Lenzner

Apollo freshman runner

Zili Lenzer took first place in the 800 at ROCORI, clocking a time of 2:21.83.

Carly Mitchell

Holdingford freshman jumper and runner

Carly Mitchell won the long jump at the meet in Montevideo with a distance of 15-10 ½. She also placed fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:38.41.

Emily Novak

Foley senior jumper and vaulter

Emily Novak’s triple jump distance of 34-8 ¼ placed first in the true team meet at ROCORI. She also competed in the long jump, placing fourth with a jump of 16-1 1/2 and the pole vault, clearing 8-6 and placing fifth.

Olivia Pauly

St. John’s senior runner

St. Thomas commit Olivia Pauly ran a 4:57.6 in the 1,600 on May 9 at the Dave Sieben Invitational in Melrose, placing first by almost 30 seconds.

Louise Ruzanic

St. John’s junior runner

Louise Ruzanic ran the longest race in Melrose, taking first in the 3,200 with a time of 11:41.31.

Olivia Sauer

Foley sophomore runner

Olivia Sauer swept the three shortest running events at the at the Section 5-2A meet in Cold Spring. Her time of 12.82 was first in the 100, her 25.83 was first in the 200 and her 1:00.1 was first in the 400.

Clara Schad

Cathedral senior runner

Cathedral distance runner Clara Schad was first in the 1,600 in Cold Spring with a time of 5:21.67 and third in the 3,200, her 11:36.01 off of the winning time of 11:27.22.

Brianna Schneider

ROCORI junior thrower

On her home field, Brianna Schneider threw the shot 37-8 ¼, winning first in the meet. She placed second in the discus with a throw of 106-8.

Ava Thoennes

ROCORI senior jumper and runner

Senior Ava Thoennes, running on her home track at the Section 5-2A True Team meet, placed first in the long jump, clearing 17-3 ¾. She also tied for the highest clearance in high jump – a bar at 5-7 – but placed second on attempts. Thoennes ran a 13.08 in the 100, placing second.

Aurora Walberg

Royalton junior runner and jumper

At the Section 5-1A True Team meet, Aurora Walberg won the 100 and 200 and placed second in the high jump on attempts. She cleared 5 feet in the event. Walberg ran a time of 13.04 in the 100, beating teammate Lydia Prokott by a tenth of a second. In the 200 Walberg was first with a 27.76.
