POLL: Spring sports players up for April 7-13 athlete of the week

SAINT CLOUD – All of spring sports are back in full swing and with their return comes the return of the weekly athlete of the week poll.

During the week of April 7-13 several area track and field athletes won events at meets in addition to lacrosse players scoring their first goals and diamond sport athletes getting into the groove of the season.

In alphabetical order, the St. Cloud Times lists the achievements of athletes from Albany, Becker, Foley, Holdingford, Kimball, ROCORI, Royalton, Sartell-St. Stephen, Sauk Rapids-Rice, St. Cloud Apollo, St. Cloud Cathedral, St. Cloud Tech and St. John’s Prep. Vote for who you think had the most impressive performance last week until Saturday evening.

Sophia Anderson

Albany girls golf senior

Albany’s girls golf team was able to play 18 holes between nine April 9 at Stone Creek in Foley and 18 on April 10 at Monticello Country Club. The Huskies placed second in Foley and were 10 ^th in Monticello.

Senior Sophia Anderson was in the top 10 athletes both days. She shot a 46 at Stone Creek, tying with senior teammate Madi Ramler for fifth behind the leader’s 42. At Monticello Anderson was seventh with an 83, seven shots more than the winner.

Owen Angell

Becker track junior

Junior Owen Angell won both hurdles races April 11 at Zimmerman’s Thunder Quad in addition to competing in two field events. His 110 time was 15.51 and his 300 time was 42.18. In the high jump Angel jumped 5 feet six inches, tying for second. He placed fourth in the long jump.

Rilee Breth

Holdingford track and field sophomore

Rilee Breth won three events April 9 at the BBE Invitational then two days later she placed top three in four events at the Houligan Extravaganzaa in Pillager. At BBE she won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.36, the high jump with a height of five feet two inches and the long jump with a length of 15 feet three inches.

In Pillager Breth won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.71 and the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.32. She took third in the high and long jumps. Breth cleared four feet 10 inches vertically and 15 feet horizontally.

Team of Sawyer Brown and Landon Peterso n

Becker tennis sophomores

In three team wins for Becker (6-1) boys tennis last week, the No. 1 doubles squad of Sawyer Brown and Landon Peterson had three wins, only giving up four sets to its opposition. On April 9 Brown and Peterson beat Connor Peterson and Ben Crandall of St. Francis (0-1) by a score of 6-0 and 6-1. On April 11 the pair took down North Branch’s (1-5) Isaiah Das and Ethan Thelander 6-0 and 6-1. The next day Brown and Peterson beat Tech’s (2-4) Josh Vogel and Marohl Ben 6-2 and 6-0.

Ella Duevel

Foley field senior

Last week Ella Duevel won two shot put events April 9 at the Albany Invitational and April 12 at the Craig Johnshoy Invite. At the meets she also placed first and second throwing the discus. In Albany Duevel threw the shot 33 feet two inches and the discus 106 feet four inches, winning the events. In Pierz, her shot hit a mark of 34 feet eight and a half inches and her discus throw of 106 feet two inches was less than four feet from the winning mark.

Sascha Duevel

Royalton softball junior

While her team went 1-2 in the opening week, junior Sasch Duevel hit 5-8 without any strikeouts. She scored three runs for Royalton (2-4) and hit two more in, meaning she was involved in more than a quarter of the Royals’ scores over the opening three games.

Riley Fischer

Kimball softball sophomore

In Kimball’s (5-0) opening win over Holdingford (3-3) on April 11, Riley Fischer was spectacular on the mound, striking out 19 in the seven-inning 3-1 game, setting a school record.

Fischer played left field April 12 against Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted (0-5) and hit 2-4, scoring a run and hitting one in. She was 0-4 with a strikeout against the Huskers.

Garrett Frink

Holdingford track junior

Last week Garrett Frink ran two 400-meter races timed at 53.3. He won the dash April 11 at the Houligan Extravaganzaa after placing second behind teammate Aiden Pellett on April 9 at the BBE Invite. On April 11 Frink also took second in the long jump, leaping 19 feet seven inches.

Ethan Guck

Becker baseball senior

Becker (6-0) went 3-0 last week, including tight wins over St. Francis (3-1) on April 9 and North Branch (3-3) on April 11. Senior Ethan Guck hit .500 over eight at bats, knocking in eight of the Bulldogs’ 16 RBIs over the three games. On April 12 against Monticello (3-2) Guck hit two two-run home runs. He only struck out once in the week, but on the mound in a relief appearance Guck had two Ks over two innings. He was credited with the save in the 5-3 win over North Branch.

Trinity Hadler

Albany track freshman

Freshman Trinity Hadler won the 3200-meter race April 12 at the Craig Johnshoy Invite with a time of 12:51.32 and placed fourth in the 1600-meter race with a time of 5:52.86. Hadler also ran the 800-meter race April 9 in Albany, placing seventh.

Nick Hansen

St. John’s Prep track and field senior

On April 9 at BBE, senior Nick Hansen placed first in the 3200-meter race, tied for second in the triple jump and was fourth in the long jump. In the distance race, Hansen ran a time of 10:08.73 and in the triple jump Hansen reached 37 feet nine inches. In the long jump his mark was 18 feet four inches.

Connor Harens

St. Cloud Crush boys lacrosse senior

St. Cloud (2-1) started its season on the road with a 8-4 win April 11 at Mound Westonka High School (1-2). Senior Connor Harens was the leading scorer for the Crush with three goals against the White Hawks. He also assisted a goal for four points in the game.

Adler Herdina

Becker tennis sophomore

For Becker, Adler Herdina has been tearing up the tennis court. The sophomore went 3-0 last week playing in the No. 2 solos slot for the Bulldogs. He only allowed opponents two set wins, starting off with a 12-0 record April 9 against Caleb Sheehan of St. Francis. Later in the week he won 6-1 and 6-0 on back-to-back nights April 11 against Gabe Wurdemann of North Branch and April 12 against Jair Wucherer of Tech.

Ella Kirchner

Sartell track junior

Junior Ella Kirchner won both the 100 and 200-meter sprints April 11 at the Norm Ayen Invitational at Cambridge-Isanti. She ran times of 12.71 and 26.8 in the events.

Zac Kreuzer

Albany boys golf senior

On April 10 at Spring Brook in Mora, Albany’s Zac Kreuzer placed second individually while the Huskies won the meet as a team. Kruezer scored a 75, one stroke behind freshman winner Tollef Birkeland of Pequot Lakes. Two other Huskies were in the top five and Albany shot 315 as a team, ahead of second place Pequot Lakes at 321.

Jonas Malmanger

St. Cloud Crush boys lacrosse senior

St. Cloud senior Jonas Malmanger goalkeeper allowed four goals on 21 shots on goal in the Crush’s win over Mound Westonka. His save percentage was .810.

Layla Mathews

Becker girls golf junior

Junior Layla Mathews shot a birdie and four pars on the back nine to tie for fourth April 10 at Monticello Country Club. She shot an 82, behind the leader’s total of 76. Becker was fifth as a team.

Brooke Mushatt

Sauk Rapids field senior

Brooke Mushatt took first in the shot put and discus events April 11 at the Princeton Invitational. She threw the shot 31 feet three and a half inches and the discus 114 feet two inches.

Emily Novak

Foley field senior

Senior Emily Novak was on the podium in six field events over two meets last week. She brought home two wins April 9 at the Albany Invitational and two April 12 at the Craig Johnshoy Invite. In Albany Novak won the long jump and triple jump with distances of 15 feet eight and a half inches and thirty three feet four inches. She also placed second in the pole vault, four inches shy of the winning 10-foot bar.

In Pierz, Novak won the long jump with a jump of 16 feet four inches and the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet eight and a half inches. Finally, she placed third in the pole vault, achieving a height of nine feet.

Olivia Pauly

St. John’s Prep track senior

Olivia Pauly won two mid distance events April 9 at the BBE Invitational by wide margins. She took the 800-meter gold with a time of 2:31.25 and the 1600-meter with a time of 5:05.37 — nearly 40 seconds faster than second place.

Josiah Petersen

Foley baseball senior

In two wins last week for Foley (3-1) after a opening-day loss, senior Josiah Petersen performed well statistically on the mound and at the plate. He logged an inning and an out in the 14-3 win over Pequot Lakes (1-4) on April 9 and three days later he started the first 5 2/3s innings against Eden Valley-Watkins (3-2), holding the Eagles scoreless on two hits with 12 strikeouts. He had three strikeouts against Pequot Lakes and three total walks in both appearances.

At the plate Petersen was 2-6, scoring four runs and knocking in one RBI. He catches when not pitching.

Louise Ruzanic

St. John’s Prep track junior

Louise Ruzanic dusted the 3200 competition in the BBE Invite on April 9. Her winning time of 11:42.34 was more than a minute clear of second place.

Gavin Sales

Holdingford track and field sophomore

Competing in four events on April 9 at the BBE Invite and April 11 at the Houligan Extravaganzaa, Gavin Sales won both 110-meter hurdle races and was second in both 300-meter hurdle races.

Sales improved from race to race, clocking a 16.93 on April 9 in the 110, then a 16.29. In the 300-meter races, Sales ran a 45.05 then a 43.96.

He was fifth in the triple jump at both meets and 8 ^th and 11 ^th in the long jump.

Olivia Sauer

Foley track sophomore

Last week Sauer had two wins in different events in two meets. On April 11 at the Albany Invite, she won the 400-meter race with a time of 1:00.17 and she won the 100-meter race April 12 at the Craig Johnshoy Invite with a time of 12.8. Sauer also placed second in the 400-meter race at the Johnshoy Invite with a time of 1:01.18, about a quarter second behind the winner.

Carter Schwalbe

Albany track senior

Senior Carter Schwalbe won two 1600-meter races last week, April 9 at the Albany Invitational and April 12 at the Craig Johnshoy Invite. He improved on his time, going from 4:47.46 to 4:44.3. At the Johnshoy Invite Schwalbe also placed second in the 800-meter race, his 2:07.12 just over a second behind the winner.

Eaen Sticha

Foley field senior

Eaen Sticha won the pole vault April 9 at the Albany Invitational, clearing 12 feet. He lost six inches vaulting April 12 at the Craig Johnshoy Invite, placing second.

Lauren Woelfel

Becker track and field senior

Senior Lauren Woelfel vaulted all the way to 10 feet April 11 at Zimmerman’s Thunder Quad. She won the event and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.73. Woelfel also placed ninth in the triple jump.
