Three student athletes from Rush City High School took a big step forward in their athletics journeys on Monday, April 15.

On that day Kayla Diedrich, Ella Ferrie and Cora Sayotovich signed national letters of intent to compete in sports at the collegiate level.

They joined Lydia Bengtson, who signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball at Bemidji State in the fall, as future college athletes in the Tigers’ Class of 2024.

Here is a closer look at the three newest signees and their college choices, as well as their overall emotions when going through such an important stage of their lives.

    Kayla Diedrich

    Sport: Basketball.

    College: Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

    Parents: Rob and Laura Diedrich.

Why did you choose Wisconsin-Eau Claire? “I decided to sign with Eau Claire after I went on an overnight with the girls and found out they are super-nice. And I really like the campus there. I plan to major in nursing there.”

What were your emotions on signing day? “I was a little nervous, but it was fun. I’m glad for everyone who came out to support me.”

Who would you like to thank for helping you reach this day? “I want to thank all of my coaches throughout the years. And I thank my parents and my friends – I couldn’t have done it without any of them.”

    Ella Ferrie

    Sport: Volleyball.

College: Fayetteville (N.C.) Technical Community College.

    Parents: Chad and Betsy Ferrie.

Why did you choose Fayetteville Tech? “My boyfriend, Caleb Johnson, is stationed there. I want to study sonography, and there are only three colleges in Minnesota that have it. So I decided to go out and experience some new things in North Carolina.”

What were your emotions on signing day? “It’s very surreal. I feel I’ve dreamed about doing this since I was little, and I looked up to the older players. Now I actually get to do that. I’m very happy.”

Who would you like to thank for helping you reach this day? “I want to thank my coaches – Eric Telander, Erika Matzke-Stoltz and Summer Garr. I want to thank Northern Lights, the club that I played for. And I want to thank my parents for being with my through this whole experience.”

    Cora Sayotovich

    Sport: Volleyball.

    College: Wisconsin-River Falls.

Parents: Ben and Jodi Sayotovich, Trisha Christianson.

Why did you choose Wisconsin-River Falls? “I chose River Falls because the coaches and the athletes made me feel so at home when I visited. I made really quick connections when I visited, and it was so easy to decide. When I was on campus, I decided that’s where I wanted to go.”

What were your emotions on signing day? “It definitely makes it feel more official now that I’ve signed this little piece of paper, as silly as that sounds. I’m really excited.”

Who would you like to thank for helping you reach this day? “I’d like to thank all of my high school coaches – [Eric] Telander, [Erika] Matzke-Stoltz and [Summer] Garr – and my club coach, Caleb Greene. I thank all of my teammates through the years, and I thank my parents for being so supportive of whatever I wanted to do.”
