Hiawatha, Kansas. — April 16, 2024 — 11-year-old Kansas student, Madeline Aller, qualified to compete in the 2024 National Memory Master Competition for Classical Conversations students. The competition is designed to challenge students’ memorization and public speaking skills by encouraging them to recite information from their Foundations curriculum across seven subjects, including history, geography, English, grammar, Latin, math and science.

Hiawatha runners have strong day at Rossville
The Red Hawk track team competed at the Rossville Invitational on Friday afternoon, and yet again, Hiawatha turned in some of the meet’s best individual performances. On the ladies side, Dani Morton earned a first place finish in the 100 meter dash, with Julia Caparros in 11th in the junior varsity race. Morton also took gold in the 200 meter dash, with Kyndall Nelson in 10th, Jaci Feldkamp in 12th in JV and Caparros in 13th. Nelson followed that up with a fourth place finish in the 400. Pauly Rockey snagged first place in the 800 meter run, just ahead of teammate Ava Andres in second in the JV ranks. In the 1600, it was another Rockey first place finish, with Andres again in second in junior varsity and Lexys Ruch in 13th. Bri Guilliams finished 3rd in the 3200, while Laura Lierz took third in the 300 meter hurdles.
Lady Red Hawks stymied by Perry in home losses
Hiawatha’s young softball team continues to battle against stacked Big 7 opponents, as they hosted the 3-loss Perry Lecompton Kaws on Monday evening, and saw stretches where the visitors looked like one of the dominant squads in the league. The Red Hawks fought hard, but ultimately fell in both games, despite nearly pulling off the upset in the late game.
