ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - A 46-year-old man experiencing a mental health crisis was safely apprehended Monday evening after he reportedly assaulted a family member and barricaded himself, his wife and two children inside a Royal Oak home for several hours.

The Royal Oak Police Department said officers responded to the home in the 1600 block of Whitcomb, near North Campbell Road, just before 5 p.m. on March 25 after a caller told 911 dispatchers that they had been assaulted.

When police arrived to the scene, the 46-year-old man went into the home and barricaded himself inside with his wife and two kids. Officers tried to communicate with the man, but he refused to leave the house and showed signs of experiencing a mental health crisis.

"Officers were informed the male had recently purchased long guns, was wearing a bullet proof best during the incident and had been displaying behavior that indicated a decline in his mental health," the department said in a press release.

Over the course of several hours, negotiators from the Troy Police Department and the Oakland County Sheriff's Office worked on talking the man into exiting the home.

In a 10:13 p.m. update, police said the incident was brought "to a safe and successful conclusion" as members of the Oakland County SWAT team took the man into custody.

The 46-year-old sustained minor injuries from a Taser deployment, but no one else was injured.

Officers searched the home afterward and found weapons, ammunition, night vision goggles and a tactical vest inside -- all of the items were confiscated.

The man is now facing charges of domestic assault and simple assault.

"The outcome of this incident was the culmination of outstanding teamwork between members of the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Troy Police Department, and Royal Oak officers," Chief Michael Moore said after the arrest. "While the subject is facing criminal charges from this incident, officers and deputies at the scene did a great job being aware of the subject's mental health and took extra measures to bring this incident to a peaceful conclusion."

An investigation into the incident remains active. No other details were provided.
