City turns out for Halloween and Dia de los Muertos celebrations
October ended with a flurry of Halloween and Dia de los Muertos activities. Trick-or-treaters were invited to the parking lot Thursday at the Abilene Police Department for some serious candy-gathering as the line for sweets stretched down the parking lot and around the building. At about the same time Thursday, the Grace Museum held its annual Dia de los Muertos festival in their courtyard and parking lot. Ballet Folklorico del Big Country: Alma de Nuestras Raices performed for guests who afterward went on to make sugar skulls, and others visited the ofrenda altar to honor deceased loved ones. There were ofrendas at the Abilene Zoo this past weekend as well, where their first-ever Dia de los Muertos celebration was held both days. Sponsored by Great Lakes Cheese, the celebration featured performances by Ballet Folklorico de Alvaro Muñoz and live music from Mariachi Asi es Mexico, along with animal encounters. 125th Anniversary of the Bazaar
In Albany, mention of the “Bazaar” means the holidays are near — and this year’s event carries extra significance. Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its first Bazaar this Saturday, Nov. 15, continuing one of the town’s oldest and most beloved community traditions. What began as a small gathering of church women raising funds for local mission work in 1900 has grown into an annual event that continues to bring together friends, families, and neighbors from across the area.

'Cabaret Under the Stars' an intimate evening of music at the Paramount
If life is a cabaret, then there's a whole lot of livin' about to happen. Last weekend saw the final of three performances of the Paramount Theatre's "Cabaret Under the Stars," a biannual fundraiser with the audience seated at tables onstage cabaret-style. The evening show ran Thursday through Saturday with 11 local performers. But how does one end up onstage at the Paramount? It isn't just practice, practice, practice. It's putting yourself out there, too. "There's a meeting between the music director, the (show's) director and myself. We start recalling people that we know, and we invite them," said George Levesque, the Paramount's executive director and show producer. "But we have had so many performers that somebody has said, 'Hey, you should listen to Jim Bob,' and somebody will send us a video of them singing, and we're like, 'Holy cow, we need to get them in our next cabaret,'" Levesque said. The theme for the show was "Songs for the Road," featuring songs related to places. Some of those places were real like the 1953 "Istanbul! (Not Constantinople)" by The Four Lads. It was covered by They Might Be Giants in 1990 and sung at the Paramount by Kyle

Everyone's favorite ogre returns to Abilene this week when "Shrek, the Musical" hits the stage at Abilene Christian University's Boone Family Theater. The show runs at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and on 2 p.m. Joey Banks directs with Chris Hollingsworth as musical director and choreography by Teri Wilkerson. Steven Ward will conduct the live Orchestra. “Shrek is the story about leading in love and seeing your neighbor. It does not get more biblical than that," said Swearingen-Meeks. "The cast has been rehearsing since late August and is doing an incredible job." There will be special Halloween events alongside the production, as well as face-painting, and photos with Shrek all weekend. Call 325-674-ARTS (2787) or go online for tickets.
