It's election day in the Rock River Valley. Here's what you need to know.

When can I vote?

Polls are open throughout the Rockford area today from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Where's my polling place?

A list of polling places is available on election websites throughout the region. Election offices also are open today to assist voters with questions.

Which is my election office?

For city residents, the Rockford Board of elections office is located at 301 S. Sixth St. in Rockford, 815-987-5750.

For county residents, the Winnebago County Clerk's Office is located at 404 Elm St. Room 104 in Rockford, 815-319-4252.

In Boone County, the Clerk & Recorder Office is located at 1212 Logan Ave, Suite 103, in Belvidere, 815-544-3103.

In Stephenson County, the Clerk & Recorder Office is located at 50 W. Douglas St., Suite 1002, in Freeport, 815-235-8266.

Do I need to be registered to vote?

Yes. To register, you must be a U.S. citizen. You must be at least 17 years old on or before the date of the primary election and turn 18 on or before the date of the general or consolidated election. You must live in your election precinct at least 30 days prior to election day. And you must not be serving a sentence of confinement in any penal institution as a result of a conviction.

Can I register to vote on election day?

Yes. You will need to provide photo identification such as a driver’s license, state issued ID card or other photo ID and proof of address such as a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check, or other government document that shows your name and address.

Where can I view sample ballots?

If you live in the city of Rockford, you can view a sample ballot on the Rockford Board of Elections website.

If you live in Winnebago County outside of Rockford, you can view a sample ballot on the Winnebago County website.

If you live in Boone County, you can view a sample ballot on the Boone County website under Clerk and Recorder and Voting and Election information.

If you live in Stephenson County, you can view a sample ballot on the Stephenson County website.

Will I need to choose a ballot to vote?

Yes. To vote in the primary election, you need to choose either a Democratic or Republican ballot. This means you'll only be able to vote for Republican candidates or Democrat candidates in this election.

If you're not sure which ballot you wish to use, polling places will have sample ballots on display to help with your decision.

What races are on the ballot this election?

Today's election is called the presidential primary because voters will be voting for who they want to run for president in the November general election.

Other races on the ballot include county races for state's attorney, chairman, circuit clerk, coroner and county board as well as races for Congress and state legislature.
