Correctional officer accused of smuggling contraband into Vt. prison
RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) - A Vermont correctional officer faces charges after investigators say he smuggled contraband into a prison. Vermont State Police say David Orvis, 28, of Rutland, coordinated with at least two separate inmates to transport tobacco into the Marble Valley Correctional Facility. Police believe the inmates paid him to do so.
Middlebury Police announce ‘good morning project’
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (WCAX) - Middlebury Police are dialing in to the community’s most vulnerable. Their new “Project Good Morning” facilitates regular phone calls with locals who live alone or without regular care. Starting at a police station in New Hampshire, the idea has spread to several stations throughout Vermont. Middlebury residents can sign up to receive a daily call between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Police say they hope it encourages independent living, and prevents tragedies common among those without an immediate support system.

BURLINGTON, Vt. — A Massachusetts man is getting a second chance after a judge determined that he had "earned his freedom" following a drug conviction in Vermont. Federal prosecutors said 21-year-old Christian Torres-Santiago was sentenced on Monday to two years of probation after he previously pleaded guilty to drug possession with intent to distribute illegal narcotics in Vermont.
