ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Rochester man was sentenced to serve more than a year in prison Monday for his role in what prosecutors called a check scheme.

Shydequan Wynn, 31, was convicted of financial institution fraud and sentenced to 18 months in prison.

According to prosecutors, Wynn stole checks from mailboxes, then forged or altered them to make them payable to himself or others involved in the scheme. In total, there were 112 victims.

The stolen or altered checks added up to $179,447, though prosecutors say $74,911 of that total came from successfully altered and negotiated checks.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service led the investigation.
