ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Rochester man was convicted of assault Friday for beating his niece so violently, doctors had to put her into a coma.

Prosecutors said Jacob Seffens, 34, had been in a sexual relationship with the teenager. He beat her with a baseball bat on June 14, when she tried to end that relationship, leaving her with life-threatening swelling to her brain.

According to prosecutors, the victim is expected to make a full recovery thanks to the staff at Strong Memorial Hospital.

“This survivor faced a terrible trauma and was courageous enough to face her assailant in court,” Assistant District Attorney Patrick Gallagher said in a statement issued after the verdict. “I would like to thank this young woman for her bravery in sharing her story, which will help prevent Jacob Seffens from hurting anyone else.”

Seffens faces between five and 25 years in prison when he is sentenced on May 28.
