Fairmont City Council considers Honorary Street Names Program
FAIRMONT, W.Va (WDTV) - At their meeting Tuesday evening, the Fairmont City Council held the first hearing on the new ‘Honorary Street Names Program’. Residents can submit applications for honorary street names in Fairmont if the ordinance is approved. Name entries must be deceased individuals who have contributed significantly to Fairmont, Marion County, or even the country, with a strong tie to the city. Applications will cost around $200 to cover sign expenses, and the newly reinstated ‘Historic Landmarks Commission’ will have the authority to approve or deny entries. The new street signs would not replace the originals, Instead, the honorary names would be placed underneath. The Director of Planning and Developing in Fairmont, Shae Strait, thinks the honorary street names could help bring historical or local figures awareness.
