The Oct. 8 event focused on both its recent academic progress and current infrastructure needs. Superintendent Kirk Shrum shared the progress made during the first year of its strategic plan, Visalia Unified Forward 2030: A Community-Driven Blueprint for the Future . “Our board has established five-year goals that go well beyond the state assessment data and reflect what our community told us matters most: preparing students for success beyond high school, keeping them engaged in their learning, and supporting their continued growth,” Shrum told the audience. “I'm pleased to report that not only have we grown from our baseline through year one, but recently received state data indicates a continued growth trajectory. “First, the job of our school system is to get kids ready for the next step,” he explained. “We don't know what step they're going to take. Gomez brothers fuel Tulare Western football success
Football isn't just a sport at Tulare Western High School. It's a brotherhood and family. So much so that every season, Mustangs head coach Derek Rosa likes to joke with his team that he spends more waking hours with his players than he does with his own nuclear family. That time together is a big reason why Tulare Western (6-0, 1-0) is off to its best start this decade. The Mustangs are 6-0 for the first time since 2018, and that family mindset has played a big role. For the Gomez brothers — Jeremiah, Josiah, and Isaiah — the family term holds even more value. The trio all start for Tulare Western. Jeremiah, a senior, and Josiah, a junior, both start at linebacker. Their younger brother, Isaiah, is the team's starting running back as a freshman. Together, the Gomez trio has helped spearhead a Tulare Western team that Rosa considers to be the Mustangs' best squad since 2019. That year, Tulare Western went 11-3, won an outright East Yosemite League championship, and advanced to the Central Section Division II title game. Isaiah is the team's leading rusher. Through six games, Isaiah has rushed for 384 yards and five touchdowns. He's
