SpaceX's next rocket launch to tie California's 2025 record. Watch

Update: Scrub! The launch, originally targeted for Oct. 20, has been postponed for a third time, with a window now due to be open between 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. PT Friday, Oct. 23, according to a launch alert . SpaceX attributed the delay to "unfavorable weather." Californians may want to make a point to catch one or both of the next two rocket launches in the state . Coming up today (Oct. 20,) SpaceX plans to get its Falcon 9 rocket off the ground from the Vandenberg Space Force Base on a mission that will tie the annual record for launches in California. The next mission, of course, will then set a new record at 72 launches for all of 2026 – so far. Both missions will see SpaceX deploy batches of Starlink internet satellites to Earth orbit. Thousands of Californians may lose power as Red Flag Warning issued

Thousands of Californians may lose power in the next few days, as Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Southern California Edison announced they may shut down the power grid in certain areas as a precaution due to hazardous conditions. As the remnants of California's summer weather dissipate and much of the state's foliage dries out and becomes flammable, the National Weather Service issued several Red Flag Warnings across Northern and Southern California over the next few days due to the potential fire risk. Scott Rowe, a Senior Hydrologist with the National Weather Service, noted that the state will have ideal conditions for potential wildfires over the next few days as humidity levels remain low and winds move through the region. Specifically, Northern California is expected to see easterly winds pushing toward the Sierra Nevada foothills, while Santa Ana winds kick up in Southern California. "It's now the driest time of the year, especially after a long summer, and the fuels are dry.... Those ingredients combined can lead to critical fire weather conditions in the event of a spark or source of flame," Rowe said.
