Severe storms could unleash damaging wind, large hail in El Paso
Severe thunderstorms packing damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall could impact El Paso and southern New Mexico. Scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected Thursday, Oct. 22, and Friday, Oct. 23, with the potential for severe weather Thursday afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service in El Paso. Multiple rounds of thunderstorms could bring wind gusts of up to 60 mph, large hail, frequent lightning and heavy downpours. The threat of flash flooding is particularly concerning as soils across the region remain saturated from heavy rainfall in late September , the National Weather Service said. Rainfall totals of 0.5 to 1 inch are expected across the region Thursday through Friday, though some areas could receive 1.5 to 2.5 inches. The severe weather comes as an upper-level low-pressure system over California is expected to draw near-record levels of moisture into the Borderland, creating favorable conditions for widespread showers and thunderstorms. Safety tips during a flood During a flood, water levels and flow rates can change quickly. Remain aware and monitor local radio and television outlets. Avoid floodwaters at all costs and evacuate immediately when water starts to rise. Stay Informed: Listen to radio and television, including NOAA
