Inside Rochester’s Laser Lab: Home to The World’s Largest Academic Laser
The University of Rochester is home to more than a world-renowned music school and premier programs in optics and research. Just a short drive away from River Campus is the world’s largest academic laser. That’s right, the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) here at URochester is home to the OMEGA Laser System. This year, the LLE received a record $111 million in funding, the largest annual funding in its history. This funding will allow the lab to significantly modernize its operations and extend its lifespan, ensuring it remains operational and reliable into the 2040s. Rush-Henrietta students walk out over school safety
Dozens of Rush-Henrietta high school students staged a walkout Sept. 28 after a classmate was hospitalized the week before following a fight at the school . The fight triggered a 40-minute lockdown on Sept. 24 after a staff member thought they heard a gunshot. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office responded to the high school, confirmed there were no weapons involved and cleared the scene. District officials said the fight was pre-arranged and involved a student who was not permitted on campus that day. The district increased security and made counselors available for students. Shabbar Zaidi, a senior, said last week's fight wasn't the first this year ― and he believes students face few consequences for other behavioral issues like vaping in the bathroom. "We feel there's a lack of discipline from the administration, a lack of care from the administration, for the students' well-being," he said outside of the high school Monday. Zaidi said the problems affect students who aren't involved, too, especially when rumors start to fly. He had a hard time discerning what was true about last week's fight. The district, he said, has since become a target for racist online commentary. "I can't trust anything right now,"
