Letter to the editor: Backcountry accidents can be avoided with proper communication
With an increasing number of backcountry travelers, I think it is important for the community to work together to improve safety in the backcountry. We saw this with the Quandary Peak accident, and unfortunately these types of situations are only going to increase. Using radios in the backcountry can help mitigate this risk, and we should all be leveraging community channels during these type of situations. If different groups can easily communicate a lot of danger can be mitigated. Rocky Talkie does provide some channels, but I believe this could be better publicized by the county online and at popular trailheads. Telluride Mountain Club does a great job with its website and posting the codes at the start of a lot of these zones. Happy and safe spring shredding.
