James Solomon Russell Museum memorializes pioneer Black educator
James Solomon Russell’s legacy in Lawrenceville will not be soon forgotten. Russell was born into slavery in 1857 in Mecklenburg County. He received an education at what would later be Hampton University and entered divinity school and the Episcopal Church. In 1888, he founded what is currently known as Saint Paul’s College to offer courses such as English, history, physics, algebra, Bible study as well as industrial training to African-Americans. The school opened with fewer than a dozen students but would eventually grow to nearly 800 at the time of his retirement in 1929, when his son would succeed him as principal.
