In the late 1960s and early 1970s the Asheville medical community began a remarkable transformation into one of the finest in the country. This was led by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Charles Keller and medical cardiologist Dr. John Russell. Multiple subspecialty medical and surgical groups were attracted to Asheville including critical care, nephrology, oncology, neurosurgery and many others. In 1979 Dr. William Simons came from Wake Forest to found Asheville Infectious Disease Consultants. This new practice coincided with some remarkable medical developments including a marked increase in the complexity of antibiotic treatment, an increasing number of immunocompromised patients due to advances in cancer treatment, and perhaps most significantly, the early days of the AIDS epidemic.
