RICHTON, Miss. ( WHLT ) – A set of twins at Richton High School will make history at graduation next month.

Lauren and Landon Smith will graduate at the top of their class. Laurel will be the valedictorian, while Landon will be the salutatorian.

“It’s so special to get to share something with him since we’ve shared so much together over the past few years. Something this big is so awesome,” said Laurel.

“It’s nice. Especially getting to do it with your twin. I mean, it’s so sucks to lose, but it’s alright,” said Landon.

The twins said their competitive nature is the secret to their success. Laurel said she’s always wanted to be valedictorian, while Landon challenged himself to keep up with his sister. Both worked together to make sure the other was doing their best in school.

It wasn’t always easy for the pair. They were born premature. Lauren had a stroke and was told she may never walk and would have learning disabilities. Their mother said the setbacks pushed Laurel to work harder.

“I’ve seen lots of late nights. They’re into sports. So after cheer, after baseball, coming home and making sure all their work is done, making sure it’s done correctly. They work really hard. They’re really driven. They’re very competitive with each other. So, they go back and forth,” said Amber Smith, the twins’ mother.

After graduation, Laurel plans to attend nursing school at William Carey. Landon plans to study electrical engineering.
