Where a Juvenile Hall Once Stood, Area 1 Candidates Make Their Case
On October 10, I went to Farber Educational Campus with a recorder in my handbag and a bit of election season cynicism. Many election forums can seem similar. This location is far from typical. Farber, Fresno Unified’s roughly $65 million alternative education campus, sits on the former Fresno County Juvenile Hall, which closed in 2006 and was torn down in 2019. Walking in, I felt that this space had not yet completely forgotten its past. Somewhere under the brand-new paint and career pathway banners this old land still seemed to be listening, wondering what the grownups would say about kids now. On the other hand, I also saw a monument to progress. Ever since I was a teenager, I have advocated against the school-to-prison pipeline, and this was a visceral representation of my goals, especially since the demolition lined up with my own senior year of high school.

Roosevelt scores 60 unanswered points to extend Little Big Game streak vs Fresno
Fresno High football coach Steven Daniel dialed up some trickery when the Warriors faced Roosevelt in the 97th Little Big Game. Fresno, coming off a one-win season, wanted to go out in style in its finale. The Warriors opened with a trick play: Devon Crockett threw a swing pass to Samuel Serna, who then found a wide-open Zayden Skinner for a 60-yard touchdown, giving Fresno a surprising 15-0 lead. “We’ve got a lot of fight,” Daniel said. “The future is bright.” In the end, however, Roosevelt scored 60 unanswered points to roll to a 60-15 victory Friday night at Ratcliffe Stadium. The Rough Riders extended their Little Big Game winning streak to 10 games and will head into the playoffs, likely in Division IV. Fresno, meanwhile, will have a full offseason under Daniel to regroup and work toward turning things around next season. For now, the night belonged to Roosevelt in a game that featured several ejections. “We kind of know what kind of team we are,” Roosevelt coach Ricky McCoy said. “Once we get going, we get going. They had some fortunate plays back-to-back. Put us in a little hole, but our guys knew what we were coming out

Tulare Western clinches outright EYL title with Bell Game win
Tulare city champs. Bell Game champs. And now, outright East Yosemite League champs. The Tulare Western High School football team completed the trifecta on Friday, Oct. 30, beating crosstown rival Tulare Union 28-17 to seal a Tulare city, Bell Game, and an absolute EYL titles at Bob Mathias Stadium. The victory wrapped up a near-perfect regular season for Tulare Western (9-1, 4-1). The Mustangs' only loss came to perennial power Hanford (7-3, 3-2) in Week 10. Tulare Western entered the 2026 campaign with outstanding success in the summer, winning 7-on-7 passing crowns at the Fresno State and Cal Poly tournaments. But outside of the team and the Tulare Western community, there weren't many people picking the Mustangs to win an EYL championship. That didn't matter, though. Why? The Mustangs wanted to show it on the field. "It was awesome," Tulare Western head coach Derek Rosa said. "I think they had so much of a stigma about them, 'OK, you guys can win 7-on-7 championships, but what about real football?' For them to kind of go out and prove that they can do it in real football is awesome. I think our league is super, super tough, and to go out

Tulare Union football's Darren Bennett plans to retire after 36 years
TULARE — It's the end of an era. Tulare Union High School head football coach Darren Bennett is planning to retire from coaching and teaching at the end of the 2026-27 school year. According to Central Section historian Bob Barnett, Bennett is the section's longest-tenured and active-winningest head coach. In 36 seasons, including a four-year stop at Central Valley Christian that began in 1991, Bennett has compiled an overall 261-136-1 coaching record. Bennett's first season at Tulare Union came in 1995. The 62nd annual Bell Game is expected to be his last rivalry showdown as a head coach. Tulare Union (4-5, 2-2) hosts Tulare Western (8-1, 3-1) on Friday, Oct. 30, with a city and East Yosemite League championship on the line at Bob Mathias Stadium. A Tribe win clinches a share of the EYL title for Bennett's squad. Tulare Union has won six straight Bell Games. "It's been great," Bennett said. "I've coached hundreds and thousands of great players, some who went to play collegiately, and in the pros. Even those who just played high school, it's been enjoyable to coach all those kids. They all make the team. It isn't just the guys who played in the NFL
