Athletes of the Week June 2
This Cape Henlopen senior laxer plays attack. Luke is the surfer, skimmer, strider and a stealth striker on the lacrosse field. He never forces a shot and always looks smooth. Luke scored four goals in the quarterfinal win on the road at Archmere May 27, giving him 100 goals scored for his career. Luke followed up that performance by scoring four again in a 17-4 semifinal win over Caesar Rodney May 31 in Dover. “It’s been fun watching Luke develop as a player over his four years in the program,” said Cape boys’ lacrosse head coach Geoff Shupard. “He seems to be at his best against the better teams. We would love to see Luke and his senior teammates go out with a championship.” The Vikings will take on Salesianum in the state finals Saturday, June 3. Luke plans to play at Flagler College in Florida next season.
Mike Wardian wins Masser Five-Miler
Dr. Lee Masser was an icon in the Cape Region running scene. Wherever he went to race, he was well known to so many runners. From Delaware to Florida and occasionally in the Northeast, Midwest and western Maryland, Doc ran an average of 120 races a year for 20 straight years. That averages to more than two races each weekend all year, which to me is just amazing. Doc joked to me, “I tell Mary I’m going out to get milk and bread, then a few hours later I return with a trophy.” The truth is, it was true. Folks had little trouble picking out Doc, as he always wore the same outfit — orange shorts and no shirt — regardless if it was 90 degrees or 30 degrees. I started calling him Doc in 1990 and it stuck. Hundreds of people always wondered what type of doctor he was. He would tell the men he was a doctor of running and tell the ladies he was a doctor of love. This year marked the 30th Masser Five-Miler in memory of the late Dr. Lee Masser.

E-bike rider thanks Rehoboth Cycle Sports
I recently had the unfortunate experience of being knocked off my e-bike by an SUV while underway east on Rehoboth Avenue just past Second Street. Fortunately, in the silver lining sense, I crashed onto the pavement right in front of the Rehoboth Cycle Sports shop. Now, as I mend here at home from an expanding count of aches and pains, I want to acknowledge the extraordinary kindness of the woman named Katie at that bike shop.
