Juneteenth Film Festival to feature documentary on legendary Gainesville educator
Using hip-hop and dance helped the late math teacher Gloria Jean Merriex take Duval Elementary School in Gainesville from an "F" to an "A" school in 2003. It was that excellence that inspired the documentary titled “Class of Her Own,” which will be presented during the Juneteenth Film Festival from 6-8:30 p.m. on June 8 at the A. Quinn Jones School auditorium, 1108 NW Seventh Ave.
Bird of the week 2024 | Common loon
The common loon is not common in Marion County but every so often one stops by for a visit. This one was spotted at Tuscawilla Park in May, sporting its snappy tuxedo-like breeding plumage. Its breeding grounds are far north of us in the northern U.S. and Canada.
