Palo Cedro to see changes with new pharmacy, new brewery | The Buzz
Earlier this year, one of the former Rite Aid stores in greater Redding got a new identity when Val-U MART , an independent grocery store, opened in Westwood Village. Now things are happening at the former Rite Aid in Palo Cedro on Deschutes Drive just off Highway 44 east of Redding. Modoc Family Pharmacy is expected to open a location there this fall. The business will take up about 4,000 square feet of space in the old Rite Aid building. Ken Miller of Northstate Commercial Partners said the 16,000-square-foot building will be subdivided into three spaces, adding that he is negotiating with an auto parts retailer to take up about 7,000 square feet. He declined to name the auto store because a lease has not been signed. Philip Harvey of Modoc Family Pharmacy in Alturas said the Palo Cedro location will be called Shasta Family Pharmacy. He said former Palo Cedro Rite Aid employees will work at the new business. “Everyone in the community knows them and they’re really excited to be at that exact same location. I am really excited,” Harvey said. Rite Aid filed for bankruptcy and went out of business last year, closing all of its retail

PG&E tests new way to bury power lines in Lakehead
Lakehead residents may notice fewer overhead power lines this summer. Pacific Gas and Electric completed an undergrounding project, placing a half-mile section of electric distribution line underground, the utility company announced in August. Crews used a new method called the Ground Level Distribution System (GLDS), which allows for shallower installation than traditional undergrounding projects, according to the announcement. When ground conditions make it difficult to bury lines at the typical 30-inch depth, GLDS is used to place lines in fire-retardant polymer trays surrounded by a special geopolymer concrete casing. This method reduces vegetation-related risks and offers protection from pedestrians and vehicles, according to the announcement. PG&E: Crews used new tech to put power lines underground in Lakehead The Lakehead project used GLDS in its minimum cover configuration, which allows for installation in a shallow trench between 8 and 16 inches. Undergrounding electric lines eliminates nearly all risk of wildfire ignition from those sections of the electric grid, according to PG&E. Using GLDS makes it possible to achieve those wildfire

New Redding subdivision with big lots for smaller houses OK'd
A large subdivision in the northeast portion of the city moved a step closer to being shovel-ready after the Redding Planning Commission unanimously approved it on Tuesday, Aug. 11. Commissioners approved the tentative subdivision map for The Oasis , a 143-lot subdivision on nearly 50 acres off Oasis Road and just north of Gold Hill Golf Club. But approval came after some concerns raised by public speakers about traffic and a biological study done for the proposed subdivision. Brian Burk, who lives in Bend, Oregon, owns the property at 6201 and 6251 Oasis Road, and 2333 and 2121 Gold Hills Drive. He told the Record Searchlight after the meeting that now that he has secured the tentative subdivision map, he will put the land up for sale. “I will not be building the homes,” Burk said. He declined to say how much he will be asking for the property. Burk told commissioners that he and his wife, Sandra, have been developing homes in Redding since 1981 and have been involved in the creation of more than 2,000 housing units here. They have lived in Bend for 10 years. “We have been working for a long time to get to this

Commission to consider 143-home subdivision in northeast Redding
Plans for a large subdivision in the northeast portion of the city will come before the Redding Planning Commission on Tuesday, Aug. 11. Commissioners will consider a tentative subdivision map for The Oasis, a 143-lot subdivision on nearly 50 acres off of Oasis Road and just north of Gold Hills Golf Club. Brian and Sandra Burk are the applicants. Tuesday’s meeting starts at 4 p.m. in the City Council Chambers on Cypress Avenue. Homes in The Oasis would be built at 6201 and 6251 Oasis Road, and 2333 and 2121 Gold Hills Drive. Roads would be built to give residents access to the neighborhood from Oasis Road to the north and Gold Hills Drive to the southwest. The homes would also be served by a network of newly built roads that would connect to Oasis Road and Gold Hills Drive via Pleasant Hills Drive. In his report to the commission, senior planner David Schlegel said, “development would be limited near greenways and stream corridors.” The project also would include grading to provide the foundation for a future community park. Lot sizes would range from 7,000 square feet to 16,416 square feet, Schlegel said. His report does not state the size

Sports memorabilia, frame shop latest addition to downtown Redding
Jeff and Laura McLemore are making a market in downtown Redding. Laura in July opened BLT Eats at the former Court Street Eats on Placer Street. Now they are getting ready to open Sports Legends and More on the corner of Market and Yuba streets inside the former Juniper Stone store, which relocated to Pine Street last year. Sports Legends and More is a licensed dealer of Fanatics, Upper Deck, Panini America and TRISTAR Productions, according to the McLemores. The store also is a full-service frame shop. The store is well stocked with local sports teams’ swag, including the San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Golden State Warriors. But with its licensing agreements, Sports Legends and More can order T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, coffee mugs, license plate frames, etc. of any sports or college team. Jeff McLemore told me they plan a soft opening for Tuesday, Aug. 11. The husband-and-wife team is originally from Chicago. They moved to Nevada in the late 1990s and have a Sports Legends and More location in Reno at the GSR Resort & Casino. They decided to relocate to Redding after meeting Troy and Cinnamon Parrott, who own Goodtimes Pizza in Palo Cedro. The Parrots
