Candlelight vigil Tuesday at Quitman’s Hogg Park
The annual candlelight vigil for child abuse awareness in Wood County will be held Tuesday, April 30 from 6-7 p.m. at Jim Hogg City Park in Quitman under the pavilion. The event will include music. Booths will be set up and food available from 5:15-6 p.m.

Emory Police Department arrests convicted felon during campus protest
The Emory Police Department (EPD) arrested Derek Zika on the Emory University Quadrangle at 2:55 p.m. on April 28 during a pro-Palestine protest. Zika, who is not affiliated with Emory, was carrying knives and pepper spray when EPD arrested him. Additionally, police obtained a warrant to search Zika’s vehicle and found a hatchet, an axe and two knives inside a bag that also contained survival gear. EPD transported Zika to the DeKalb County Jail.

May is bringing blessings to Sulphur Springs. Two bright spots for our city occurred under sunny skies on Wednesday, May 1. The first was the much-awaited 11 a.m. ribbon-cutting for the Sulphur Springs Senior Citizens Center building at 301 Oak Ave. Although move-in time is still ahead, the first event scheduled in the facility is the Ms. Hopkins County Senior Classic Pageant on June 1, 2024. Already, nine contestants have signed up and at least one more is needed. Ladies aged 60 and older may apply.
