QUINCY — Finally. The long wait officially ended Sunday night for Tommy Elston, who won his first crate late model track title at Adams County Speedway. Elston has been an on-again, off-again semi-regular at the Broadway Bullring since about the mid-1990s, but had never come closer to a championship than a runner-up points finish in 2017.

Ashland — Maybe there's something magical in that new turf. In their second game at their new stadium, Southern Boone defeated Quincy Notre Dame in the final minute, 35-34. The winning play came from Brady Dapkus, who scored on an 88-yard kickoff return to give the Eagles the win.

HANNIBAL, Mo. — The Quincy High School volleyball team began its week by showing some resiliency it normally doesn’t have to provide. Hannibal rallied after losing the first two sets Monday night at Korf Gym by winning the third set and pushing the Blue Devils to the brink in the fourth set. Ultimately, Quincy won 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 28-26, but it took twice as long as normal for the Blue Devils.

QUINCY — It has been 40 years since the Quincy Notre Dame football team engineered one of the biggest one-season turnarounds in school history. The Raiders were coming off back-to-back 2-8 seasons in 1983 and had lost 19 of their previous 23 games, dating to the tail end of the 1980 campaign. It had been nine years since their lone playoff appearance.

John Wood Community College (JWCC) held its 20th annual livestock judging invitational successfully. This year, thirty local schools took part in the event. This invitational aimed at assessing high school students on their livestock analyzing skills. Specifically, they were evaluated on cattle, swine, sheep, and goats. Each student was judged individually and as part of a team. Their ability to pinpoint the ideal traits of each animal species was a part of this evaluation. Their quick decision-making abilities and memorization skills also played a key role in their final assessment.

In their second home game of the season, Marion County defended their stomping grounds once again, soundly defeating Thomas Nelson 49-21. One of the few teams that remained on the Knights roster from the previous season, the game showed a notable improvement from the Knights over the past year, Marion County defeating the team by only 10 points (26-16) in 2022.

Rock Bridge softball went 1-1 on Friday — the first day of the September Slam Tournament in Liberty. The Bruins took down Nixa 11-9 and lost to Blue Springs 6-4. Rock Bridge was originally set to play three games, but the third pool-play game was canceled after weather delayed the tournament.
