At the Seaside City Council meeting May 2, Stanford historian Carol McKibben, who wrote a history of Seaside that published in 2011—Racial Beachhead: Diversity and Democracy in a Military Town—made an ask during public agency announcements: She had written a paper for the state, which she hasn’t yet submitted, about the connection between African Americans in Seaside and Fort Ord, and she wanted feedback.
Salinas Police arrest two suspects after vehicle chase
SALINAS, CALIF. (KION-TV)- Salinas Police arrest two people after a car chase ended in a non injury crash overnight Saturday. At around 12:30 a.m., officers tried stopping a GMC Yukon near the 200 block of Main Street for violating some CVC violations. As soon as police tried stopping the car, a passenger from the car fled but was immediately caught by an officer in the area. The suspect was also found to have an unregistered 9 mm handgun on them.

BLM issues seasonal fire restrictions for public lands

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is issuing seasonal fire restrictions for public lands managed by the Central Coast Field Office effective Monday, May 20, due to dry conditions and wildland fire danger. These seasonal restrictions are in addition to the year-round statewide fire prevention order and the permanent fire restrictions in place at the Fort Ord National Monument and Cotoni-Coast Dairies. This seasonal fire order will remain in effect until further notice.

Closure near Rocky Creek Bridge officially reopens
BIG SUR, CALIF. (KION-TV)- The area on Highway 1 near the Rocky Creek slip out is officially back open to all travelers. According to Cal Trans, a temporary traffic system was activated to allow 24/7 access to all travelers. People will be able to travel 40 miles south of Monterey, but a full closure is still in effect one mile south of Esalen.
Police shoot suspect in Seaside, Monterey County after officers hit with projectiles
SEASIDE, Monterey County – Two officers were injured in an attack that resulted in the police shooting of a suspect in the Monterey County community of Seaside Monday morning.The City of Seaside said on social media around 11:20 a.m. that the shooting took place in the area of Fremont Boulevard and Playa Avenue.According to Monterey CBS affiliate KION-TV, a person had been firing projectiles at officers before being shot by one of the officers. Two officers suffered significant head injuries, KION reported. The City of Seaside said all parties involved were expected to survive.Additional details about the shooting and the nature of the projectiles were not immediately available. Members of the public were urged to avoid the area during the investigation.Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call Commander Justin Pascone of the Seaside Police Department at 831-899-6748 or the department's anonymous tip line at 831-899-6282.
