10 stranded dolphins rescued off Cape Cod coast

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (WPRI) — Ten Atlantic white-sided dolphins were released back into the ocean near Provincetown Wednesday after they were found stranded in nearby Wellfleet on Tuesday afternoon.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) said its staff and volunteers first learned that 11 dolphins had been found stuck in shallow waters just three hours before low tide: eight near the town pier and three more in a part of the Herring River known as “The Gut.”
According to the IFAW, it took a 45-person team of IFAW staff and AmeriCorps members seven hours to rescue the dolphins and transport them to deeper waters off the coast of Provincetown.
Six dolphins were transported in the mobile dolphin rescue clinic , and four more were transported in a different vehicle. One dolphin died on the scene due to trauma caused by the stranding.
The 10 surviving dolphins were released together.
“This rescue had many challenges due to the number of dolphins, the difficult mud conditions, and having to deal with two simultaneous mass strandings,” said Lauren Cooley, a stranding biologist at IFAW. “The team was able to overcome all of these challenges to give these dolphins their best chance at survival.”
