PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Boston man was arrested in Providence on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, stealing her vehicle and abducting their six-month-old child.

Rhode Island State Police said they got a call from Peabody police around 2:30 a.m. warning that 41-year-old Jamaine Johnson might be driving to Rhode Island with a baby in the vehicle.

In addition to allegedly strangling his girlfriend, Johnson also threatened to hurt himself and the child if confronted by law enforcement, according to police.

About an hour later, troopers found Johnson’s vehicle on Melissa Street in Providence. He tried to run away but was caught after a brief struggle, during which he resisted arrest and assaulted a trooper, police said.

The child was unharmed and taken to Hasbro Children’s Hospital for evaluation. Police said the baby was not secured in the front seat.

Johnson was charged with assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, obstructing a police officer, as well as being a fugitive from justice on a warrant out of Peabody for domestic assault and battery, strangulation, kidnapping, threats to commit murder and larceny of a motor vehicle.
