Two teachers from sunny California make their way to EVSC
EVANSVILLE — Sunny Southern California. SoCal. Land of beautiful beaches, beautiful people, perfect weather and celebrity sightings. 90210. Hollywood. Megan Howell and Danielle Meyers left all that this year to come to Evansville and teach in EVSC schools — and they're glad they did. EVSC gets new teachers from everywhere. It gets them right off the tree, from people who've grown up in Evansville. It gets them from not-so-distant places in Indiana and neighboring states. Some, like Howell and Meyers, have teaching experience and some are fresh out of school. Howell and Meyers stood out among new teachers in this year's summer orientation groups because they came here all the way from the left coast. "To have two people coming to us from California ... certainly made that unique," EVSC spokesman Jason Woebkenberg said in what he cheerfully acknowledged was a classic understatement. It's not like Howell and Meyers came together, though. Howell, a special education teacher at North High School, taught last year at Rise Kohyang High School , a charter public school in the Koreatown community of Los Angeles. Meyers, a special education teacher at Thompkins Middle School, worked last year at Grossmont Union High School District in

Memorial football proved it has championship resolve in victory over Reitz
EVANSVILLE — This was the exact scenario that Memorial coach John Hurley wanted to witness. The reasoning harkened to how this season has unfolded. The Tigers have not been tested much in the second half thus far. They've been too good — five of the six victories coming by 30-plus points — against nearly everybody on the schedule. How would Memorial, a team with championship aspirations, fare down the stretch with a big game in the balance? The answer was emphatically found on Friday, Oct. 2 at Enlow Field. Memorial delivered its loudest and biggest victory to date with a 30-27 triumph over Reitz. Flip any sequence, especially in the second half, and the result on the scoreboard possibly changes. It was that close. But the Tigers had the winning mix in the final minutes. That could prove vital in the coming weeks. From the other side: Reitz football falls short in Week 7 against Memorial More: Southwestern Indiana week 7 high school football scores, updates "This is good for us to kind of get punched in the mouth and compete," Hurley said. "We weren’t as efficient as we needed to be, but we made plays when we needed to."
