The above ground safe room in Prentiss is now in place at the Ronald W. Jones Memorial Complex.

Funding for the safe room was secured last fall. A 90-10 grant was awarded to the county with $6,825.60 of the project to be provided federally and $758.40 to be paid by the Town of Prentiss for a total project cost of $7,584.00.

The Hazard Mitigation Grant is provided through FEMA/MEMA funding.

It was applied for by Jefferson Davis County Emergency Management Director Jocelyn Ragsdale.

“This is something we have been working on for several years since the Easter tornadoes,” said Ragsdale.

“We have been working toward acquiring safe rooms since the easter tornadoes,” said Ragsdale. “We hope to have more throughout the county in the future,” she said.

The shelter is from Lee’s Storm Shelters out of Aberdeen. It is seven feet square and holds approximately 14 people.
