Wawa could be coming to Horry County-but some residents aren't happy about it

Wawa could be coming to Horry County. The Planning Commission unanimously approved Thursday plans to allow a new gas station convenience store to open in Little River – but residents aren’t happy. The request, brought by WW LLC as an agent for Baytree SC LLC, sought to amend a 3.14-acre parcel at Water Grande Boulevard and Highway 9 East for a convenience store with gas pumps and a car wash. Although the lot is currently zoned for commercial use, developers needed permission to install gas pumps at the site. The Pennsylvania-based convenience store chain has something of a cult following, particularly for its sandwiches and other fast foods. A new Horry County store would mark the first location in South Carolina. But not everyone’s pleased with Wawa’s plans. Hundreds of residents showed up at the Planning Commission meeting in opposition to the proposed convenience store. Several residents shared public comments expressing concerns that increased traffic would strain infrastructure, endanger public safety and displace wildlife. Republican U.S. Rep. Russell Fry will continue representing South Carolina’s 7th congressional district after voters reelected him for a third term. With all counties reporting, the incumbent congressman garnered roughly 56.71% of the votes with 172,308 ballots, based on preliminary results. “America’s future belongs to the people who show up with ideas,” Fry said in a statement. “The Democrat party has spent a lot of time telling America what’s wrong with it. They embraced socialism with open arms, an idea that has failed everywhere it’s been tried. Horry County's top prosecutor, probate judge to keep jobs after 2026 elections

Horry and Georgetown counties won’t see a change in the court system’s top prosecutor after Tuesday’s elections. Jimmy Richardson won another term as solicitor for the 15th Circuit after running unopposed. In Horry County, the Republican incumbent candidate garnered 101,261 votes with 71% precincts reporting. Richardson was appointed as solicitor for Horry and Georgetown counties by then Gov. Nikki Haley in 2012. Republican Allen Beverly also won another term as probate judge. He, too, was unopposed, securing 100,465 votes out of 71% precincts reporting. He was first elected to the office in 2022.
