Mother accused in infant’s death appears in Scioto County court

SCIOTO COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – A woman accused of being responsible for her infant’s death appeared in Scioto County Court Friday morning.

Kristen Vassar is charged with involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment and drug possession, according to court records. Friday’s hearing was held in the judge’s chambers and details of that hearing have not yet been released.

The charges stem from February 2024 when the Portsmouth Police Department was called to an apartment in the 1900 block of Kendall Avenue in Portsmouth regarding an unresponsive infant. The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office says the Portsmouth PD found the 3-month-old lifeless and they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Vassar’s next hearing is scheduled for June 27, according to court documents.
