Two Eastside Seniors Earn Military Academy Appointments
Two students from Eastside High School recently accepted offers of appointment to military academies. On Friday, May 10, during a joint signing ceremony at Eastside High School, Congressman Mike Collins (GA-10) congratulated the two seniors for earning appointments to America’s Service Academies. Molly O’Brien accepted an offer of appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. The daughter of Kevin and Deanna O’Brien of Social Circle, O’Brien will join the Mariners NCAA Division III Swim Team. Additionally, Michael Hairston accepted an appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Hairston is the son of Michael and Latoria Hairston of Covington. Both will enter their respective academies in July and upon graduation will become commissioned officers in the United States Armed Forces.
Youth Medals Presented
Sergeant Newton National Society Daughters of the Revolution Chapter in Covington recently honored two cadets for the 2023/2024 school year — Cadet Majesty Whitaker-Hicks with the Newton County Civil Air Patrol and Cadet Cardis Betts with the Newton County High School JROTC. Each unit is allowed to select one cadet per year to receive this medal.

2nd person arrested for helping escaped Newton County inmate, sheriff’s office says
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A second person has been arrested for allegedly aiding the escape of a Newton County inmate, according to the sheriff’s office. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office announced late Sunday that 30-year-old Diamante Seymour of Garden City was arrested on felony charges of aiding or allowing another to escape lawful custody.
