Athens softball completes two-game sweep over Meigs with five-run victory

POMEROY - It’s hard enough to beat someone once, let alone twice in a row. Doing it in consecutive days after the previous team had come into the series with a nine-game win streak is nothing to scoff at.

That’s exactly what happened for Athens softball over the past few days. After shutting Meigs out at home on Tuesday afternoon, the Bulldogs (7-3, 2-2 Tri-Valley Conference-Ohio) took the trip out to Pomeroy on Wednesday, this time taking the Marauders (9-5, 3-4 TVC-Ohio) down 8-3 to complete the season sweep.

Athens would collect 10 hits with the eight runs, led by multi-hit days from Kayla Hammonds, Khyla Brannon and Fern Sigman. Brannon and Sigman would grab three and one RBI respectively while Hammonds scored a run in the victory.

Rylee Toadvine would score three runs and grab a pair of RBIs in a 1-3 performance while Kendra Hammonds added an RBI and two runs scored along with a hit. Evie Garland and Ellie Beck-Aden would also record a hit for the Bulldogs.

Hammonds would get the nod to start in the circle, going 5.1 innings while allowing four hits and three runs while allowing six walks and five strikeouts. Sigman, just one day after pitching a complete game, would come in to finish up the final 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit in the process.

Ava Horn and Liyah Smith would grab a hit and an RBI respectively for Meigs. Bella Roush, Delana Wright and Natalie Goode would also record a hit in the loss.

Facing off against Athens for the second straight day in the circle, Goode would throw yet another complete game. She allowed 10 hits along with five earned runs, striking out six while allowing a walk.

Jumping out in front early for the second day in a row, Athens was able to build a comfortable lead in the first at-bats of the game. Following a leadoff single from Beck-Aden, Kendra Hammonds would eventually bring the sophomore in with a single to center field for the first run of the game. Toadvine and Brannon would then smack RBI hits to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.

Meigs would actually threaten with bases loaded in the bottom of the first but Athens would be able to get out of it. The Marauders would finally break through in the third and tie things up in a long inning, sending seven batters to the plate with an RBI single from Smith highlighting the frame.

It wouldn’t take long for Athens to regain the lead with what would become the game-winning run. After leading off the inning with a single, Sigman would work her way all around the bases, scoring on an error from the catcher.

Hammonds would complete a much-needed shutdown inning in the fourth before Athens went back to work with the bats. In the fifth frame, a run-scoring bunt from Toadvine followed by a sacrifice fly from Brannon gave the Bulldogs a 6-3 lead at the time. Sigman would then cap off the inning with an RBI single to right field, giving Athens the four-run lead.

With Hammonds continuing to keep zeros on the board, Athens would grab its final insurance run in the top of the seventh courtesy of an RBI single to center field from Brannon. Meigs would eventually get a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the frame but couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity, dropping a second-straight contest to Athens.
