POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – One of Poland’s most famous homes is undergoing major renovations and will soon be an inn again.

The 148-year-old Inn on the Green in Poland was built in 1876. When it was bought three years ago, the house was empty and needed a lot of work, but the renovations that began before Christmas are now almost complete.

“This was an immense task to take on,” said owner Mitch Veynovich.

Veynovich, a 1967 Wilson High graduate, has owned the house for three years. He said finding people with the right vision and talent to create what he was looking for was challenging.

But the right person ended up being Mary Tursky who renovated her own historic property only six houses away. She had the passion and experience Veynovich was looking for and he gave her a blank check to renovate his house, which would end up being around $300,000.

“I said this is the person, and she’s been here tirelessly. This is her passion to do this,” said Veynovich.

“So long before I even had met Mitch, I had put the entire plan for the entire house together,” said Tursky.

All the carpet was removed and the original hardwood floors were restored. The outside trim is being painted, and carpenter Jeff Schwab is reproducing the corbels that accent the roof line. A labor-intensive project was the main stairway which had water-damaged wallpaper.

“There was water damage. It was peeling, so we took everything down and did all of the plaster repair work that needed to be done,” said Tursky.

“It’s a lot of work. I don’t know how they did this back in the day,” said Schwab.

Where possible, what was original is being saved, like the hitching posts at the curb, the marble fireplaces, and a surprise discovery made during yard work.

“This is the original well for the house. It’s the original pump, so we’re going to get this baby up and running again because we think it’s just too neat of a feature,” Tursky said.

The house is officially known as the Walter Arrel home and his only condition was that the village allowed him to graze sheep on the village green.

In the mid-1980s it became the Inn At the Green and will again be a bed and breakfast with the same name.

The plan is to have the Inn occupied sometime this summer and be ready for the tour of homes in September.
