2027 Idaho Teacher of the Year works with ‘purpose and intention’
BOISE — Amanda Holland didn’t always want to be a teacher. She wasn’t born one. She didn’t dream of a career in education when she was a little girl. Instead, motherhood helped launch Holland into what has been a successful 23-year career for the 2027 CapEd Credit Union Idaho Teacher of the Year. Among many things, Holland teaches second grade at Boise School District’s Washington Elementary School, in Boise. Along with her husband, Gordon, and two adult sons, Stuart and Parker, Holland stood in the Washington Wildcats’ gymnasium on Wednesday morning amongst many of her teaching peers from inside and out of BSD, about 10 classes full of children from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade and 2026 Idaho Teacher of the Year Laron Johnson. Johnson teaches social studies and economics at Jefferson Joint School District’s Rigby High School in Rigby. Holland told the students how she wound up heading down her teaching path. “I had children of my own and I was inspired by things that were happening in their classrooms,” Holland said to the students who were quietly sitting cross-legged. “I decided that I would go back to school and be a teacher. These are my two sons, Stuart and

Weiser’s Pioneer Elementary Third Graders Visit Snake River Heritage Center
Weiser’s Pioneer Elementary Third Graders recently finished learning about Weiser’s history, so we took a trip to the Snake River Heritage Center to wrap up our unit. The students learned so many interesting things about our community, including the Shoshone people, early settlers, mining, farming, the railroad, and the fire that destroyed Old Weiser. One of their favorite people to learn about was Walter Johnson, who played baseball for the Weiser Kids before going on to play for the Washington Senators and eventually being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. It was fun to see the students make connections between what they learned in the classroom and the history of our community. We had a great time learning and exploring together!
