Student take a prom pledge ahead of prom night

YATESVILLE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Students at a Luzerne County school are taking a vow to stay safe on prom night.

Fellerman and Ciarimboli Law presented their Safe Prom Pledge campaign to Pittston Area juniors and seniors, to show the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving.

A sobering simulation.

While this scene is staged, it’s a reminder for the students at Pittston Area High School, of the very real consequences of drinking and driving.

“You really gotta think twice about you know what you’re gonna do cause you’re not only risking your life if you’re doing something crazy like that but just innocent people around you, just driving not doing anything wrong you know it could impact them,” explained Ciaran Biobow a senior at Pittston Area High School.

It’s all a part of the Fellerman and Ciarimboli Law Safe Prom Pledge campaign.

“The prom pledge is where we go and we speak to local high schools about the dangers of drinking and driving on prom night,” said Brian Corcoran an attorney at Fellerman and Ciarimboli.

It’s a program that’s been around for the past ten years, presenting students with statistics, and real stories of those who have lost their lives from drinking and driving.

“If a parent tells them don’t drink, that’s one thing but if they see the consequences, and that’s what it’s all about the consequences. We show them pictures from decades past, years past, of kids that have been killed, multiple deaths and it ruins people’s lives forever,” added Corcoran.

Those consequences rang clear to the students on Friday.

“People should think twice before doing something that they could lose their life or somebody else,” says Sahilly Kleinmoeagig a senior at Pittston Area High School.

“My brother goes to this school I got a lot of really close friends that are like brothers to me like I couldn’t imagine losing a teammate or just anybody,” stated Biobow.

According to data from the CDC, more than forty percent of the drivers who die in drinking and driving accidents are under 25 years of age.
