Buzz Lightyear and Woody, the famous animated characters from the “Toy Story” movies, are embarking on another adventure at “The Science Behind Pixar’ exhibition, which opened Saturday and runs through the rest of the year at the soon to be Daniel G. and Carole L. Kamin Science Center on Pittsburgh’s North Shore.

They may just meet some new friends as the city transforms into “The World of PIXARburgh.”

Buzz and Woody, along with Mike and Sulley from “Monsters Inc.,” Nemo from “Finding Nemo” and Wall-E from “Wall-E” will emerge along with other lively characters at the two-story, 12,000-square-foot exhibition.

“’The Science Behind Pixar’ exhibition invites visitors to learn how technology, storytelling and creativity come together to create iconic movies like ‘Toy Story,’ ‘Monsters, Inc.,’ and ‘Finding Nemo,’” Jason Brown, Henry Buhl, Jr., director of the science center said in a statement.

The exhibit has more than 50 hands-on interactive activities designed to incorporate science, technology, engineering, and math, also known as STEM.

Guests will have opportunities for selfies and social-media post material as they take pictures with life size re-creations of these beloved characters. They can create a robot utilizing magnetic body parts such as heads, arms, or legs to show how Pixar transforms scenes.

There will be re-creations of movie sets from “A Bug’s Life” and the film “Up!”

The science center will be offering related programs and screenings of the 1995 “Toy Story” and its sequels on Tuesdays throughout the summer and showings of various Pixar movies, all in The Rangos Giant Cinema.

There will be a scavenger hunt of miniature Pixar figures in the Miniature Railroad & Village® and sensory-sensitive events and an adult evening.

The exhibit was developed by the Museum of Science, Boston, in collaboration with Pixar Animation Studios and funded through support by Google, members of the Science Museum Exhibit Collaborative, Institute of Museum and Library Services and the National Science Foundation.

Pixar Animation Studios is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. Its movies and technology have won 40 Academy Awards and the films have grossed more than $14 billion at the worldwide box office.

“Inside Out 2,” Pixar’s 28th feature, will be released in theaters June 14, 2024.
