PITTSBURGH — Carnegie Science Center welcomes Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Mike and Sulley, Nemo, and many more beloved animated characters with the opening of a new two-story, 12,000-square-foot exhibition: The Science Behind Pixar .
According to Carnegie officials, following record-breaking attendance of nearly 140,000 visitors during TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition earlier this year, the Science Center is transforming the region into “PIXARburgh” from May 25, 2024, through Jan. 5, 2025, and encouraging visitors to dive into the minds of the artists and computer scientists who help bring Pixar’s award-winning films to the big screen.
“As Pittsburgh’s most-visited museum, the Science Center strives to connect visitors of all ages with science that ignites curiosity that endures for a lifetime,” said Jason Brown, Henry Buhl, Jr., Director of Carnegie Science Center. “ The Science Behind Pixar exhibition invites visitors to learn how technology, storytelling, and creativity come together to create iconic movies like ‘Toy Story,’ ‘Monsters, Inc.,’ and ‘Finding Nemo.’”
Carnegie officials say throughout the exhibit, visitors can upgrade their selfies with life size re-creations of characters from these popular Pixar favorites, including photo opportunities with Buzz Lightyear, Sully and Mike, Nemo, and Wall-E.
Visitors can also unleash their inner Pixar passion with more than 50 hands-on interactive activities designed to flex science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) muscles. Visitors will be able to:
- Create a robot friend for WALL•E by utilizing magnetic body parts that can be used as heads, arms, or legs to show how Pixar transforms scenes with minor changes.
- Adjust lights to change the mood of a scene from “Up.”Change the Sun’s location and color and adjust the brightness of interior lights on a miniature set of the living room.
Carnegie officials say visitors can extend their animated adventure throughout the year with a variety of events and public programs at the Science Center. Highlights include:
- Screenings of the 1995 fan-favorite “Toy Story” and its sequels on Tuesdays during the summer months
- Showings of various Pixar movies in The Rangos Giant Cinema every weekend
