Steelers' Mike Tomlin discusses getting to know Russell Wilson, Justin Fields

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin spoke with reporters during organized team activities on Tuesday about building relationships with quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields this spring.

"Those guys have been really good in terms of their participation and engagement," Tomlin said about Wilson and Fields, per Jeremy Pike of Steelers Depot. "It's been a fun process. It's been a fun process to get to know them. And really, the way that you get to know someone professionally is to share experiences. And so the things that we're doing out here are critical to the 'get to know.'"

Pittsburgh made wholesale changes at quarterback in March by signing Wilson to a team-friendly contract and acquiring Fields from the Chicago Bears for a conditional 2025 sixth-round draft pick.

Tomlin previously said that Wilson was in the "pole position" to start in Week 1 this coming September, but Fields insisted on Tuesday that he and the veteran are "competing against each other every day."

Both Wilson and Fields began last September as undisputed starters, but neither is guaranteed a long-term role with the Steelers at this point of the process.

Tomlin seemed optimistic that the two signal-callers would continue to work well together even after the competition heats up during summer training-camp sessions.

"They're professionals," Tomlin added about Wilson and Fields. "So I'm excited about that, but I'm not surprised by it. There's an expectation there. Both guys have been franchise guys, if you will. They've gotten out of their cars in the morning and worn the responsibility of being that guy for a franchise. So there's residual benefit from that, and I'm excited about us receiving it."

Wilson reportedly has already impressed his new teammates with a "relentless work ethic" after he allegedly left much to be desired across his two-season stint with the Denver Broncos.

While things often change quickly in the NFL, it seems that Pittsburgh's starting job remains Wilson's to lose heading into mandatory minicamp practices.

With that said, the Steelers potentially could part ways with Wilson as soon as late August if Fields emerges as the club's best option to start the regular-season opener at the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 8.
