This is the time of year when bees are active around the Pittsburgh area. Flowers are blooming and bees are looking for nectar and pollen.

As the temperatures continue to get warmer, swarming behavior increases, per Penn State Extension.

That means Pittsburghers have seen more bees swarming recently.

“Spring is starting to get into full swing and the bees have gone through a few brood cycles and will soon outgrow the areas they are in and need to swarm,” Joe Kellems, owner of HoneyBee Blues tells KDKA Radio.

HoneyBee Blues is a veteran-owned, local apiary in McKees Rocks. They specialize in honey bee removal and warm retrieval.

They also deal with ground bees, yellow jackets and bald-faced hornet removal.

Once the honey bees are removed, they are brought back to Kellems’ apiary, giving them the best chance to survive.

One swarm was recently spotted at a Mt. Lebanon church. Police put caution tape up so people would avoid the area around the bees.

If you’re dealing with a swarm near your residence, you can call HoneyBee Blues at 412-897-5227 or contact them on Facebook .
