A former Durham grocery finds a new role in the local arts landscape
A building that once served Pearl Mill Village as a grocery is now a home for artists and exhibitions. Laura Ritchie and Shirlette Ammons bought the property at 703 W. Trinity Ave. in 2021, renovated it and established Boardinghouse Arts there, Axios reported. The building dates to 1924, when Joseph S. Woods and his wife, Lou Ella Woods, built it as Woods Grocery; it later became apartments. Open Durham says rooms may also have been rented above the store. Open Durham notes that Pearl Mill Village’s historic district is across the street.

Phillips Farm blows into pumpkin season with a runaway star
Wind, rain and pumpkins blew through Cary, North Carolina on Oct. 11 as an inflatable jack-o-lantern was swept away by remnants of Hurricane Isaias. The pumpkin belonged to the Phillips Farms of Cary, who showcases this giant pumpkin during their fall festivals and Pumpkinfest weekends (which happened on Oct. 10-11 and Oct. 17-18 this year). While this pumpkin is typically on farm soil, it got caught in the strong winds from the storms on Sunday, and it managed to break away from the anchors that keep it in place. The pumpkin was seen rolling around the roads near the farm not long after, with a six-pound fan pump still attached to it.

Raleigh says housing, transportation bonds on ballot won't increase taxes. Is that true?
Raleigh wants voters to pass two bonds this election year totaling $203 million to fund transportation improvements and affordable housing. And the city has a convincing pitch: Unlike previous bonds, there would be no extra tax increase associated with these bonds. But that raises a question: If Raleigh isn’t asking voters to pay more in taxes to support the bonds, then how would the city be paying for them? The short answer is that taxpayers would still be paying — just in a different way. The long answer first requires knowledge of what a bond is, and why local governments have to ask voters to approve them. Alongside the bonds, there are 15 candidates for Raleigh City Council and the mayor on the ballot for the Nov. 3 election. In-person early voting runs from Oct. 15-31. What is a bond? When local governments place a bond on the ballot, they’re essentially asking voters for permission to borrow money. There are several kinds of bonds that a local government can ask voters to approve, according to the National Association of Bond Lawyers. Some require a local government to raise property owners’ taxes directly to back the loan. In this case, Raleigh
