Cooler temperatures to bring brief relief after Cheyenne ties Aug. 2 heat record
CHEYENNE — After tying a daily heat record Sunday, Cheyenne residents can expect a dramatic cooldown this week as a slight cold front pushes through southeast Wyoming, bringing temperatures down into the low 70s before warmer weather gradually returns. National Weather Service (NWS) of Cheyenne Meteorologist Mathew McLaughlin said Sunday’s temperature of 98 degrees tied the Aug. 2, 2008, record high. McLaughlin said a cold front began moving through Cheyenne Monday morning, though it is weak compared to fronts seen during other times of the year. “During the summertime, the sun and our winds are pretty much the key factors into how the temperatures will react,” McLaughlin said. “However, due to what we call an upper-level trough pushing through, that’s going to filter down some cold air, or cooler air, I guess you could say, compared to what we’ve had over the past several days.” The cooler air, originating from Canada, he said, is expected to bring daytime highs into the low- to mid-70s on Tuesday, with forecast highs ranging between 70 and 75 degrees, and lows in the 60s. But don’t get your fall gear out just yet, because the cooler temperatures will be short-lived. McLaughlin said Cheyenne should

Record 99-degree high temperature marks hottest July 26 in Cheyenne history
CHEYENNE — Wyoming’s capital city has broken many weather-related records over the past several months, and Sunday’s high temperature was just the latest. Colby Goatley, National Weather Service of Cheyenne lead meteorologist, told the Wyoming Tribune Eagle on Monday that Sunday’s high of 99 degrees broke the previous record for the hottest July 26 of 95 degrees, set in 1910. “It’s primarily just a very strong area of high pressure that’s been sitting over the central and even right along the Front Range of the U.S.,” Goatley said. “Also, with the way the flow’s set up, we are pulling in a little bit of some air from Nevada and the southern part of California. “So, while we are still getting some moisture with it, which is going to, at night, keep the temperatures warmer, we’re also pulling in a little bit of warmer air from that southwestern portion of the U.S.” The hottest temperature ever in Cheyenne’s recorded weather history is 100 degrees, Goatley said. According to recordtemps.in , Cheyenne has only reached the triple-digit high four times — on July 14, 1881; July 15, 1881; July 11, 1939, and June 23, 1954. It’s unclear whether the city will break
