El Niño outlook points to warmer winter, increased spring snow chances in Cheyenne
CHEYENNE — A developing El Niño could bring increased chances for snowfall to Cheyenne later in the winter and into the spring, even as seasonal forecasts lean toward above-average temperatures through fall and midwinter. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Prediction Center released its official winter outlook for the 2026-27 season last week. The National Weather Service (NWS) Cheyenne office took this information and created a separate outlook for the southeast Wyoming region. Noah Brauer, an NWS Cheyenne meteorologist, explained what the predictions mean for Cheyenne. The winter outlook indicates El Niño conditions are expected to influence weather patterns across the country before weakening in the first quarter of 2027. The current El Niño event is the second-strongest on record — which goes back to 1950 — for this time of year, behind only the 1997-98 event, according to the NWS Cheyenne outlook. For southeast Wyoming, the climate pattern typically brings wetter conditions in the beginning and end of winter, with comparatively drier conditions in the middle of the season, Brauer said. El Nino will impact SE Wyoming weather, state's ACT scores mixed
Good morning, and Happy Friday! The long-range winter forecast is in, and it's ... a bit uncertain. Surprised? (Be nice to our local meteorologists now. They're a good bunch of folks.) According to reporter Alyssa Tolman's summary of the NWS 2026-27 winter outlook , a developing El Niño could bring increased chances for snowfall to Cheyenne later in the winter and into the spring, even as seasonal forecasts lean toward above-average temperatures through fall and midwinter. Here's hoping at least the mountains get a healthy amount of snow. In education news, the Wyoming Department of Education reported Thursday that the average ACT composite score for the state's 11th graders last year is in the top five among states that require all students to take the exam, sitting in second place behind Illinois. Maria Weyne breaks down all of the scores for local schools. It will almost certainly come as no surprise that Wyoming's all-Republican congressional delegation is backing the GOP's candidates for governor and Congress, but Owen Houtakker wrote about it anyway (darn that editor!). In advance of tonight's second consecutive Friday football game for the University of Wyoming, WyoSports beat writer and assistant editor Alex Taylor offers his rundown

Today brings sunny skies, an expected high near 67 degrees and light breezes. Western portions of Laramie County will see similar temps in the 60s, while areas farther east across the plains could reach the low to mid-70s. A weak push of moisture moving up from Colorado could produce a stray shower between 3 and 6 p.m., but meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Cheyenne said dry surface air will keep any rainfall to little more than a brief sprinkle that barely wets the sidewalk. Cloud cover will increase this afternoon, bringing brief wind gusts of up to 23 mph before calming tonight.
