PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry rebounded from a tough loss against West Stokes by defeating North Surry 15-0 on April 15.

The Cardinals did all their scoring in their first at-bat of a game that was halted after three innings. The home team only recorded six hits, but benefited from eight bases on balls and three hit by pitches. East also made the most of their hits by recording an RBI on all but one hit. This included a three-run home run hit by Audrey Hiatt.

East maintained its No. 3 spot in the Foothills 2A Conference with Monday’s win, while North Surry dropped to sixth in the league standings.

East Surry pitcher Gracie Sechrist opened the game by forcing a flyout and tossing two strikeouts. The freshman then got on base in the bottom of the inning as she and Addy Sechrist were both walked. Emma Kate Clement was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Elise Marion score both Sechrists with a double.

North Surry pitcher Jordan Snow followed Marion’s RBI by throwing her first of two strikeouts. Hiatt was walked to load the bases once again, then Josie Baker hit a line drive to center field to score Clement. Grace Leftwich and Lilly Brinkley were both walked with loaded bases to bring in East’s fourth and fifth runs.

East Surry (6-8, 5-4 FH2A) got back to the top of the lineup with loaded bases and Addy Sechrist at the plate. Addy singled to score Baker and leave runners on all the bags, which set up a bases-loaded walk thrown to Gracie Sechrist. Brinkley made it 8-0 by scoring on a passed ball, then Snow threw her second strikeout of the inning.

Marion, who was the only Cardinal to record multiple hits, hammered a ground ball to center field to score both Addy and Gracie Sechrist and increase the home team’s lead to 10-0. Maggie Clement was then hit by a pitch, and both she and Marion were scored on Hiatt’s home run that nearly knocked down a tree in left field.

Bases were loaded once again after Baker was walked, Leftwich recorded a single and Brinkley reached first on an error. Elizabeth Hamann was hit by a pitch to bring in Baker, then East’s final run was scored when Gracie Sechrist was walked.

Marion took over on the mound for East in the second inning and threw two strikeouts while also forcing a ground out. East Surry went three up, three down in the bottom of the inning with three flyouts, then North Surry did the same with a strikeout, ground out and flyout in the top of the third.

North Surry (4-10, 2-7 FH2A) started the season 1-8, but had won three of their past four entering the game against East Surry. The Hounds averaged 9.7 runs scored during that span and even posted a big 12-8 win against North Wilkes.

West Wilkes leads the FH2A Conference with a 9-0 record. Forbush is next at 6-2, followed by East Surry at 5-4, Surry Central at 4-5, North Wilkes at 3-4, North Surry at 2-7 and Wilkes Central at 0-7.
