Sacramento ranks among top cities for rodents. How infested are we?
If you ever walked somewhere in the evening or night for a quick drink or to grab a bite and thought you spied an animal with a rope-like tail scurrying away, or thought you heard scratching noises coming from inside the walls of your home, it probably wasn’t your imagination. That’s because Sacramento has been ranked among the top cities with the most rodent activity. The extermination company Terminix ranked 50 cities in the United States with the worst rodent infestations and Sacramento is on the list. Here’s what to know: How was the ranking determined? Terminix used data from over 300 branches nationwide and compiled a list of cities where residents most frequently used rodent control services over the past year. Where did Sacramento rank? Sacramento was listed among the top 20 of the most rat-infested cities in the country landing at No. 15. Previous reporting by The Bee in 2024 , showed Sacramento ranked at No. 20 for rat-infested cities, according to a report released by Orkin that same year. Two Sacramento-area cities among safest for Halloween trick-or-treating in US
A Sacramento-area city ranked as Northern California’s safest place for Halloween trick-or-treating, according to a new national study, and another local city also cracked the top 25. The report by SafeHome.org, a website that researches home and personal safety and reviews security products, ranked 152 cities based on factors including violent and property crime rates, pedestrian fatalities, registered sex offenders and law enforcement staffing. Elk Grove ranked No. 12 on the national list, unchanged from 2025, and Roseville ranked No. 21, down from No. 17. “Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year for children, but it also comes with elevated safety risks,” SafeHome said. “Many parents are understandably anxious about this beloved fall tradition: after all, what could possibly go wrong as kids crisscross city streets, dodge cars in the dark, and walk up to strangers’ doors in search of candy?” the site said. How did other California cities fare? Modesto came in at No. 85 and Sacramento at No. 120, SafeHome said. Fremont ranked No. 24, with Santa Rosa at No. 52, San Francisco at No. 59 and San Jose at No. 82. Stockton came in at No. 128 and Oakland at No. 149, both

Sacramento Latino leaders defend Guerra after Cofer questions his immigration record
Latino community leaders and supporters of Sacramento City Councilmember Eric Guerra’s bid for the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors are criticizing his opponent, Flojaune Cofer, over a social media post questioning Guerra’s commitment to resisting federal immigration enforcement. The dispute over Guerra’s record is the latest in the battle for the 1st District seat , one of the Sacramento region’s most closely watched races in the Nov. 3 election. The exchange comes as the Sacramento region experiences a surge in immigration enforcement actions amid reports of a 45-day Trump administration operation targeting immigrants in California. Cofer’s Tuesday post criticized Guerra over what she described as “harmful” decisions that undermined his support for immigrant communities. She pointed specifically to his absence during a City Council vote involving data-sharing agreement for a regional intelligence-sharing center and his silence on a contract between the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “As a community, we can respect Councilmember Guerra’s lived experience and contributions while asking hard questions about his record, alliances, and leadership,” Cofer wrote in a follow-up post Friday. The post drew criticism from a group of Latino community leaders, including several Guerra supporters, who gathered for a news
