Ross Creek Cedars closed to motorized traffic in 2026
Motorists hoping for a drive on the Ross Creek Cedar Scenic area loop are out of luck in 2026. Due to the extent of the damage to the road and repairs needed, Kootenai National Forest officials said the road will not be open to motorized vehicles this summer. The area sustained massive damage in the December 2025 flooding. While crews are working to clear the Ross Creek Cedars Nature loop and road, near Troy, to the area to allow for better access, there is no definitive time frame for when it may re-open. “It was virtually turned upside down,” Kootenai National Forest Supervisor Chad Benson said at a May 6 Lincoln County Commission meeting. “The actual fix is years away. It’s open for bicyclists and hikers, but the roads need fixed, everything we did last year, it’s tough to see $1 million worth of work washed away. There couldn’t be a worse scenario.” Benson also expressed his thanks to the community for its continued patience and cooperation. While the road is closed to motorized vehicles, it remains open for public access via hiking or biking. Visitors are asked to use caution and watch for hazardous trees, debris and uneven walking

Kalispell Council Rethinks Main Street Safety Action Plan
Kalispell City councilors are revisiting the Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant Program, a federal program that the council opted not to apply for last year due to negative community response to an included road diet that would have trimmed Main Street down to two driving lanes and one turn lane.

City: Pave North Fork Road
The Columbia Falls City Council approved a letter urging the paving of the North Fork Road. The city has written letters in the same flavor in the past, most notably in 2023 when the county was seeking federal funding for an environmental review of paving it from the Camas Road south to just above Glacier Rim. “Over the past 15-plus years, visitation to Glacier National Park and the North Fork area has increased dramatically, placing sustained and growing pressure on unpaved infrastructure. “This growth has made the county’s routine maintenance of North Fork Road increasingly difficult and costly, while simultaneously reducing reliability and safety for recreational access. Paving this segment would significantly reduce long-term maintenance costs, improve year-round reliability, and enhance emergency access during peak visitor seasons. Columbia Falls serves as a primary gateway to Glacier National Park and the North Fork. “Improving this corridor would deliver regional economic benefits, supporting local businesses, outfitting services, lodging, and recreation-based employment, while reinforcing Columbia Falls’ role as a safe and welcoming access point for residents and visitors alike. The City Council respectfully urges Flathead County and the Montana Department of Transportation to collaborate on funding strategies to advance this project. “We stand

State suggests raising speed limit on Highway 2 through city
A recent speed study for U.S. Highway 2 through Columbia Falls to Columbia Heights actually calls for increasing the speed limit in some sections, rather than lowering it as city leaders had hoped. Back in December 2023 the Columbia Falls City Council and Flathead County asked the Montana Department of Transportation to complete a speed study for Highway 2 into Columbia Heights and for the North Fork Road from the city limits just past Aluminum Drive. Rebecca Anderson, an engineer with MDT shared the results of both surveys with councilmembers at their April 6 meeting. The U.S. Highway 2 study looked at the road from Twelfth Avenue West to Columbia Heights. While the study was complex in its analysis, taking into account the average speed of vehicles, crash reports and tickets issued, the bottom line was that based on the driving characteristics and patterns of most motorists, the speed limit from Twelfth Avenue West to Second Avenue West, should be 30 mph the study found. “...there are excessive speeds for the 25-mph and 35-mph speed zones. The average 85th percentile for the 25-mph speed zone is 33-mph (8-mph above) and the average 50th percentile is 29.5-mph. This indicates that the
