PHILIPPI, W.Va. (WBOY) — In less than six months, a semi-pro football team came together with coaches, players and a field, to form the Philippi-based Appalachian Thunder on the old football field of Alderson Broaddus University.
The team will be holding open tryouts on April 13 and 27 at 9:30 a.m. at 101 College Hill Dr. in Philippi. Officials with the team said that there will be a $50 fee to try out.
Our fee serves as a vital contribution toward covering league fees, player insurance, and essential equipment expenses such as helmet decals. Unlike many other teams, we take pride in providing all necessary gear, including pads, helmets, and jerseys, with no additional tryout fees. Additionally, we go the extra mile by covering transportation costs for away games, a rarity in our league.
On top of being a co-owner, Carr is also a player for the Thunder and said that the team is looking to begin work on a summer football camp for younger children in the area.
Those who wish to try out must be at least 18 years old. No experience is necessary, just a love and passion for football. Equipment like pads and helmets are provided and are remnants of the gear left behind from the old Alderson Broaddus Battlers team after the school filed for bankruptcy in August 2023.
12 News will continue to provide an exclusive look into the team and how it came to be later this month ahead of its debut game on May 11. Tickets are already available for purchase for $10 at the Shop n Save location in Barbour County as well as the Medallion Restaurant in Philippi. Kids 10 and under can enter games for free.
