Another historic Highland Park building slated for restoration
A more than century-old building in Highland Park that once housed a business school is slated to undergo a historic renovation that would add 14 apartments to the growing neighborhood on Des Moines' north side. Under a proposal subject to City Council approval on Monday, Oct. 19, the two-story building at 615 Euclid Ave., once home to the University of Commerce, also would have a 2,000-square-foot storefront, according to a memo from the city's office of economic development. The apartments would be one- and two-bedroom units, with eight designated as long-term affordable housing. The brick building currently is vacant and rated in below-normal condition, according to the Polk County Assessor's Office. The property value after the project is completed would increase to nearly $2 million from the current $145,000, according to the memo. The council will consider a preliminary development agreement for the $5.8 million project, providing $338,000 in tax increment financing generated from the restored building's increased valuation. Construction could begin in early 2027 and be completed by the end of the year, according to the memo.
