Perry soccer moves up after OT win, girls golf wins third straight

It was a light week for some but two Perry teams made a big impression. (Note: Events covered April 23-30)

Boys Soccer (8-3)

While the Heart of Iowa Conference has only five teams playing soccer this season, Perry can comfortably put itself at the top of the group after beating three straight teams in the league including two this past week — good enough to get the Bluejays to No. 6 in the latest Class 3A rankings.

Perry came into the April 23 game ranked No. 10 against No. 5 ranked Greene County (7-2) in a crucial matchup among state title contenders. Last year in Perry, the Rams won a 3-2 contest after hitting the last two goals of the evening.

This year in Jefferson, the script was nearly identical with the Rams erasing a 2-0 deficit in the second half for a 2-2 score when the clock hit zeroes. While Jacobo Cerna-Gomez scored his 20th goal of the season, ranked seventh in the state, senior Sergio Sanchez’s two goals provided the edge in a 3-2 overtime win.

The Jays’ defense was able to lock down the state’s top scorer from doing too much damage, as Gesser Gutierres only scored one goal. He had scored 30 in five games leading up to this matchup, scoring one goal on six shots.

With a 2-1 win over Nevada (5-6) the day prior, Perry has now linked eight wins together since starting the season 0-3.

Girls Soccer (3-7)

As the boys team kept its win streak alive 30 minutes down the road, Perry’s girls arguably had their biggest win of the year on April 23 against Greene County (0-9). Since 2018, Perry holds a 42-0 advantage over the Rams in six games. Perry won 4-0 last year.

Giving the biggest boost this time around for a 9-0 win, Perry had a pair of hat tricks from Jennifer Ramos and Yamilet Gonzalez. Abril Vaca, Amy Diaz and Jasmine Agreda-Barco also had their names called in front of the home crowd. The team allowed just one shot from the Rams, otherwise freezing them past midfield.

That game was sandwiched between a pair of 10-0 losses to Nevada and Carlisle this week.

Girls Golf

The Jayettes won their third-straight meet, and fifth overall this season after logging a season-best score in the team’s latest outing at the Perry Golf & Country Club. After averaging 212 at the course in two previous home meets, Perry wrote down 198 on April 23 against South Hamilton and Ballard.

That was highlighted with a first-place win from Addison Huntington scoring 44 for a five-stroke lead. Kaylee Wuebker, Jenna Nelson and Zoey Vail rounded out the top-five scoring.

Boys Golf

Perry was on hiatus this week and will next appear at Thursday’s meet in Panora.

Girls Track

The Jayettes placed seventh in the eight-school meet on April 23 in Adel.

Running a season-best 1 minute 6.70 seconds for sixth place in the 400-meter dash, Taryn Nehring became the third Jayette to run sub 1:07 this season after freshmen Lily Myers and Cate Erickson both did earlier in April. Roland-Story is the only other team in the conference with three athletes under that mark.

Boys Track

Perry placed 9th at the April 23 meet in Carlisle competing with 10 other schools.
